LATROBE, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to sign former University of Miami (Ohio) defensive lineman Austin Gearing, the team announced Monday afternoon.

Gearing played in 44 games across four seasons for the RedHawks, registering 38 tackles, six for a loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles last year as a redshirt senior.

Listed on Miami's 2016 roster at 6 feet, 5 inches and 257 pounds, Gearing began college as a quarterback. He was 24 of 54 for 188 yards passing as a redshirt freshman in 2013.

Gearing was a tryout player at Steelers rookie minicamp in May, but was not signed. He was listed as a linebacker on the Steelers' rookie minicamp roster.

Wide receiver Canaan Severin was released to make room for Gearing on the team's active roster.

Before he got cut Severin reflected on Charlottesville
Outside linebacker and seventh-round draft pick Keion Adams has missed the past several days of training camp practice with an apparent left shoulder injury. Adams has rehabbed on a side field.

With James Harrison rested, Anthony Chickillo (strained hope flexor) hurt and Bud Dupree coming off a spell of practices missed with what he described as a minor injury, the Steelers played with just three outside linebackers, T.J. Watt, Arthur Moats and Farrington Huguenin in their preseason opener against the New York Giants last Friday.

2 catches 24 yards and 2nd on team in receiving after preseason week 1 game ..... not good enough apparently even though most had less production ( DHB per example way more snaps ) with more opportunity , sometimes its just hard to figure why specific moves are made

So they signed a guy they knew from rookie tryout camp. Let a guy go at the deepest position on the roster. Severin may find his way back to the roster. he has before.

yeah I read that too , just kind of thinking out loud that it does not bode well for Serverin's chances and says quite a bit how the team views him whereas he was just 1 of a bunch of guys at WR they could have let go ( Tucker 1 catch 10 yards more snaps and is still here ) per example ... DHB 1 catch 6 yards and I believe more snaps ... and the list goes on really

for whatever reason Severin is not one of the priorities and others are more valued even though they failed to produce anything thus far ... so again its just hard to figure sometimes

Definitely. Maybe they feel that Severin has the best chance of sneaking through waivers and not getting snapped up somewhere else? Then when the LB/DL #'s come back up from injury they cut this new guy and bring Severin back into the fold?

Or maybe dude just isn't that good? No idea. He'll probably resurface as a DB in Arizona or something.

Severin dropped a third down throw from Dobbs on what could have been an excellent play. Got it right to him, and he dropped it.

I think that was all the coaches needed to see at that point, that and the numbers didn't work in his favor.

I'm pretty sure Severin will make somebody's roster but, he did have a few drops.
