View Full Version : First auditions: 10 Steelers to watch in the preseason opener

Steelers fans are going to have to wait until the preseason home game against Atlanta on Aug. 20 to see Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant. They might have to wait even longer to see Le’Veon Bell, who remains a no-show entering the third week of training camp.

Coach Mike Tomlin ruled his stars out of Friday’s preseason opener against the Giants. Several other starters won’t play due to nagging injuries, and the starters who will suit up might only play a series or two.

But the first game will be a chance for fans to watch players the Steelers hope will be future stars, as many of the players they selected in the draft will get extended playing time. It will give the coaches a chance to begin the process of evaluating many of the players who will serve in reserve roles this season.




Many of them are new additions through free agency and are looking to solidify their place on the 53-man roster. Others — from undrafted rookie free agents to second- and third-year practice squad players — will be hoping their performance can convince the coaches they can stick on the 53-man roster.

Friday is the first of four auditions to try and make that happen. It’s showtime for players new and old.
