It’s early in the season but if this report from PennLive’s Jacob Klinger (http://www.pennlive.com/steelers/index.ssf/2017/06/steelers_minicamp_winners.html) is any indication, Sammie Coates isn’t off to a hot start.

In a list of ten players who either helped or hurt themselves during minicamp, Coates found himself on the latter list. Klinger’s note is short but clear.

“Coates’ struggles of 2016, which were fair to blame on broken fingers, haven’t left him alone in 2017 either. There’s a dogfight to make the Steelers’ roster as a wideout this year and Coates is very much in it.”

There isn’t any specificity of what those “struggles” are, though you can imply he isn’t catching the ball cleanly. Showing off his less-mangled hand earlier in the spring, Coates said his hand was “good” but also noted he was working on getting back the strength in it. ............ Read more @

Sounds like he might be better off going for a hook.

Meh. This is like the reverse of all those "best shape of his life stories". If he still struggles in camp - then there might be something.

No idea where the docs and the team expect him to be at during this portion of the off-season.

Plus this is one dude's observations based on how many drills and practices?

I said it before, I think Hunter will move ahead of Coates.

At least the draft of 2014 was great expect for the WTF pick of Dri Archer.

2016 could be very good if Burns, Davis, etc. continues to improve.

I don't know, your number 1 selection is looking to have a very good season. Your number 3 selection looked good until mangling his fingers–as a WR. The number 5 selection is a good contributor, as is your number 6 selection.

Golson was a risk due to injury. All in all, not a bad selection when you remember the average is something lie 40-50 percent hit. We hit on 4 of 7, with injury taking it to 3-7.

I don't buy into the mangled fingers theory. The guy couldn't catch in college. He is having the same problems in the NFL. He doesn't appear to be a person who has a feel for catching.

I was gonna say - 2015 still wasn't a bad draft. 2008 and 2009, however...

If the 2, 3 and 4 picks are gone after two seasons, a distinct possibility, a draft which secured 2 starters (one potential Pro Bowl level and one journeyman - I do not regard Chickillo as full time starter) does not seem to meet the standard

2009 draft is regarded as a train wreck but that draft netted two starters (Wallace & Lewis) and a good situational player (Johnson) who is still on the roster

The 2015 draft will definitely be elevated if Bud has a double digit sack season like I expect him to. Other than that though, James is decent, Chickillo is a role player at best, outside of that, is a wash

How many 6/7 round pick are expected to be starters?

How many 6/7 round pick are expected to be starters?

:scratchchin:

A statistically significant lower % than higher round picks - my assumption after following the Steelers for some time is that you most often get your starters out of the top end of your draft. Which is why the 2, 3 and 4 picks (far more likely to be starters than 6 & 7 picks) washing out after 2 years probably means the draft probably was not a success, assuming you do not pick up starters by successful bottom feeding in the lower rounds plan to secure more than 2 starters per draft and not need a decade to turn over your roster of starters not obtained through free agency

An analysis of the relationship between draft rank and career success corroborates what I have assumed

From 2005 until 2014:
2,465 players (non-kickers) were drafted.
629 of those drafted became starters for at least half of their NFL careers
The numbers show us the following outline for finding consistent starters:

1st Round - OL (83%) LB (70%) TE (67%) DB (64%) QB (63%) WR (58%) RB (58%) DL (58%)

2nd Round - OL (70%) LB (55%) TE (50%) WR (49%) DB (46%) QB (27%) DL (26%) RB (25%)

3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)

4th Round - DL (37%) TE (33%) OL (29%) LB (16%) WR(12%) DB (11%) RB (11%) QB (8%)

5th Round - TE (32%) DB (17%) WR (16%) OL (16%) DL (13%) RB (9%) LB (4%) QB (0%)

6th Round - TE (26%) OL (16%) DL (13%) WR (9%) DB (8%) RB (6%) LB (5%) QB (0%)

7th Round - DB (11%) OL (9%) QB (6%) WR (5%) DL (3%) LB (2%) RB (0%) TE (0%)

Additional analysis shows a correlation between round drafted and career longevity as well as All Pro status

No surprises here: The higher the draft pick, the longer a player will stick around in the NFL.
https://espnfivethirtyeight.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/arthur-draftanalysis-1.png?quality=90&strip=info&w=575&ssl=1

Just as with career length, players taken earlier in the draft are much more likely to be honored as All-Pros.
https://espnfivethirtyeight.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/arthur-draftanalysis-2-corrected.png?quality=90&strip=info&w=575&ssl=1

Criticisms of NFL draft decision-making usually focus on outliers such as Tom Brady infamously being selcted with a sixth-round pick, but studies consistently show that teams do a solid job of sorting talent by pick and by round.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/its-hard-to-tell-how-good-nfl-teams-are-at-the-draft/

The draft of any player in any round is a crapshoot (e.g. - Huey Richardson, Jermaine Stephens, Ziggy Hood a& Julio Jones in the first round). But if the Steelers turn out to have swung and missed three times on Golson, Coates and Grant that is by any objective measure a significant undershoot of what is to be expected out of the 2014 draft.

Statistically, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see Dobbs chances of being a quality starter are low.

While fingers crossed he does, I hope we strongly consider trading up and grabbing a QB in early / mid round 1 next year, about where we got Ben.
