Sammie Coates shows off gnarly-looking finger at Steelers OTAs

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Sammie Coates fractured his left index finger during a regular-season game against the New York Jets in 2016. Coates played attempted to play through the injury, but lost some of his effectiveness and struggled catching the football.

This offseason, he elected not to have surgery on the injured finger and it’s left him with hands that look more like an offensive lineman’s than a wide receiver’s.

I think the reason Coates can't catch is maybe he just can't catch? I don't know, but one slightly gnarly finger isn't much of an excuse. There are several guys who did pretty well with worse.

All the other guys that can catch with messed up fingers didn't have their fingers broken at the time.

It's what he does going forward that matters.

Great point. I wasn't clear in my post. But I'll easily give Coates a pass for broken fingers. But unlike the original linked article, I'm not going to see his now healed but wonky finger as much of an impediment.

IMO, unless he got professional advice from doctors not to have the surgery (or was told that he wouldn't be ready for this year, but that it shouldn't affect him that much) then he is an idiot for electing not to get it fixed.
