Nate Peterman (http://247sports.com/Player/Nathan-Peterman-1734) just received a vote of confidence by ESPN's Jon Gruden.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Gruden was asked who he would draft among the quarterbacks coming out in this year's draft. Gruden chose Peterman, who led Pitt to their highest scoring season in program history.
“He is buttoned up all the way,” Gruden said in a story written by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/Pitt/2017/04/19/jon-gruden-nathan-peterman-nfl-draft-qbs-pitt-panthers-kansas-city-chiefs-new-orleans-saints/stories/201704190158?pgpageversion=pgevoke). “He is sharp. He is in the channel, I think, of success. I think he’s going to be a real good pro quarterback. I just have a real confidence in that. He can memorize, he can execute any play (http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/Pitt/2017/04/19/jon-gruden-nathan-peterman-nfl-draft-qbs-pitt-panthers-kansas-city-chiefs-new-orleans-saints/stories/201704190158?pgpageversion=pgevoke#) you dream up, and he loves it. I’m smitten with him a little bit as a player.
“I think any team in the league, you can cater your offense for Peterman,” Gruden continued. "He’s a lot more athletic than people think. And he can handle an extensive amount of football, so the teams that are really ambitious with deep, thick playbooks, those are the teams that Peterman would fit in with. But I hope he gets with one of those guys that can really stretch him and challenge him.”

He might be... but every time Gruden opens his mouth I get the feeling that he's blowing smoke up the monkey's butt. He's turned into a caricature.

another familiar circumstance .... Webb was Beat out by Mahomes at Texas Tech , Peterman came to Pitt because he couldn't beat out Dobbs

I like Jon Gruden, but at the same time, he did not take Aaron Rodgers in 2005 when he had the opportunity!

Yeah and Jim Finks beat out Johnny Unitas on the 1955 Steelers.

the difference is Johnny U basically never got the chance to compete ..

*edit here ya go ...

After his collegiate career, the Pittsburgh Steelers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers) of the NFL drafted Unitas in the ninth round. However, Unitas was released before the season began as the odd man out among four quarterbacks trying to fill three spots. Steelers Head Coach Walt Kiesling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Kiesling) had made up his mind about Unitas; he thought he was not smart enough to quarterback an NFL team,[7] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Unitas#cite_note-7) and Unitas was not given any snaps in practice with the Steelers. Among those edging out Unitas was Ted Marchibroda (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Marchibroda), future longtime NFL head coach. Out of pro football, Unitas—by this time married—worked in construction in Pittsburgh to support his family.[8] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Unitas#cite_note-8) On the weekends, he played quarterback, safety and punter on a local semi-professional (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-professional) team called the Bloomfield Rams for $6 a game.[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Unitas#cite_note-9)

Except, Webb wasn't "beat out" by Mahomes at Texas Tech. They were fighting for the starting QB role when Webb got injured and Mahomes stepped in. He was also a year younger so the coaches decided to stay with him as he had a very good year. Webb, noting that, transferred. This myth that Mahomes beat out Webb is just that, a myth (at least in any sense concerning earning a spot by better play instead of by injury). Furthermore, that was three years ago, and between the ages of 18 and 23, the human body, and especially the male human body vastly matures, as does the brain. As a result, something that happened between two QBs three years ago has almost no bearing on their abilities concerning draft. If this was five years in the future and they were in their late twenties when one of them was beat out by the other, then it would have a lot more bearing on, say, which one got picked up in free agency.

Yes I realize all that and I understand your need to be right... but my only point was that the best QB does not always win the job.

Only Jon Gruden has little to no credibility as a QB coach or evaluator.

Responding to your question - You can't compare Ben and Jones with with Webb and Mahomes for several reasons. The first I already stated below. Second, Ben is a career starter with 3 SBs and 2 SB wins under his belt and Jones doesn't even have a win in the NFL he can point to and say, "That was because of me." There is simply no comparison between them, and a first year and second year QB in college, both of whom are fighting for the position, and one gets injured while the other goes on to have a great season because of the injury. It's like comparing apples and isotopes.

However you need to justify it :)

Here is my problem with Peterman - what are you drafting him to be? A high-level back-up? Awesome. Pull the trigger. A front-line starter that wins you playoff games? Well now we have some troubles. I figure Peterman's ceiling is somewhere in the Dalton, Alex Smith, Tannehill range. That will let you compete, but likely not win a SB.

Low floor, but low ceiling player.

It needs to be added:

Brian Griese beat out Tom Brady while at Michigan.

Tyler Palko beat out Joe Flacco while at Pitt.

Yes, those are the exceptions to the rule... but, exceptions do indeed exist. I'm not sure that Webb is also an exception, but his reason(s) for leaving Texas Tech aren't exactly black & white (there's some gray in there).

I live for nuggets like these. Really puts into context how some players are infinitely better pros than college players. Fascinating stuff

Yeah just run down the list of Heisman trophy winners that were terrible pros:
Andre Ware
Ty Detmer
Gino Torretta
Charlie Ward
Danny Wuerffel
Christ Weinke
Jason White
Matt Leinart
Tim Tebow
RG3
Johnny Manziel

All of these QB's look like they need another year in school. Most are raw, and might never develop. Buyer beware!
