Dan was one of the most important figures in this team's history. He was the guy who hired Chuck and we all know what happened after that.

He was such a class act. He was such a selfless, wonderful person. Rest in peace Dan.

If you go to the Steelers' website, you can't even get any further than the message for Dan.

Sad to hear.

ESPN is often a joke anymore, but here's their blurb about it on their landing page.

Steelers chairman Dan Rooney dies

Rooney, who oversaw four Steelers championships as president of the team his family founded, has died at age 84.
Dan Rooney led an old guard of NFL owners who thought competitive and financial balance among teams was the most important factor in league success. As the Steelers' patriarch, he wasn't as concerned with squeezing every last dollar from the game and as he was focused on preserving its integrity and civic duty. His death on Wednesday moved the league one step further from that ideal.

Very nice, IMO.

Dan was most responsible for running the team during the dynasty in the 1970s. Real fans should read his book. He was the definition of Pittsburgh.

I've been a NFL fan for decades. Two owners I had respect for were Wellington Mara of the New York Giants...and Art Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers. A fine man, a great owner and an ambassador of the game.

R.I.P., Mr. Rooney, and my condolences to your family.

Steelers President Art Rooney II on Ambassador Daniel M. Rooney:

"It is a sad day for my family and me. My father meant so much to all of us, and so much to so many past and present members of the Steelers organization. He gave his heart and soul to the Steelers, the National Football League, and the City of Pittsburgh.

"We will celebrate his life and the many ways he left us in a better place."

Here's a story from Tony Dungy about Dan that I had never heard before. This was as important as the hiring of Coach Noll to form those great 70's Steeler teams.

“I’ll tell you another story about Dan Rooney that really probably has as much to do with the success of the early Steelers teams of any,” Dungy said. “When he hired Coach Noll there was another hiring that didn’t generate as much buzz but was just as important. There was a gentleman by the name of Bill Nunn who wrote for the African-American newspaper, The Courier, in Pittsburgh and for years the Steelers were losing and Bill wrote some scathing articles about their scouting department, about the fact that they didn’t have a lot of black players on the team, and really very critical.“

And Dan called Bill Nunn and said, ‘Hey, would you come to lunch with me?’ And he said, ‘You know what, you’ve been critical of us. Do you have some suggestions? How can we do this better?’ At the end of the lunch he said, ‘Bill, why don’t you come work for us?’ And he talked Bill Nunn into leaving his job at The Courier and becoming a scout. Bill got the jump on a lot of other teams in the NFL at that time in scouting the predominantly black colleges. You look at that roster, Mel Blount, Glen Edwards, Sam Davis our offensive captain, Frank Lewis, John Stallworth, Ernie Holmes. Guys from those SWAC schools, predominantly black schools, they got the edge, but it was really from Dan not reacting negatively to a bad situation but saying, ‘Let’s talk, how can we make this better?'”

There are very few men in the world like Dan Rooney alive today. He walked with kings yet he never gave up being a common man. Honest, respected, and loved.

RIP and thank you for being a fantastic owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
