Dion Jordan could be worth a shot for Patriots, Cowboys or Steelers

After a disappointing four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, former No. 3 overall pick Dion Jordan was released earlier this week. And, while he comes with baggage, the talent that made the defensive end such a high draft choice is also likely to earn him a second chance in the NFL.

First, Jordan will have to prove that he’s healthy after being released with a failed physical designation. Then, he’ll have to prove that the issues that led to a one-year substance abuse ban in 2015 are behind him.

However, if he can do those two things there should be an interesting market for his services. And here are three teams in particular with a pass-rushing need and the support system in place for Jordan to finally reach his potential, even if it’s only a portion of what was expected back at the 2013 NFL Draft.

No thank you. He just isn't that good. He was drafted no. 3 on pure upside alone. The baggage and lack of ability shown is not worth it

He just seems like another super athletic OLB that is very quick, but doesn't have the weight or strength to be effective. If a OT gets his hands on him....it's over. I don't know if he's added some weight and strength to help him against the run and to give him strength when rushing the passer. The only way a guy like Jordan works is if the defense acquires lock down press cover corners that hold up well enough to blitz every play. That way you are bringing more rushers than they could block and his speed becomes deadly. The Broncos played that style in 2015 when they won the super bowl, but you need a dominant secondary to play that way. If you play that style...speed kills if you have the talent to pull it off.

Between the lack of performance and the substance issues, I don't know that he would be the best choice.

Nope. Player that has a multi-year history with PEDs. How much of his on-field performance was better living through chemistry?

Plus, if we just write it off as young kid who get desperate to live up to his hype and made a series of mistakes over 2014-2015 --- what about the fact that in college he wasn't even used every down?

Smoke = fire. This guy just wasn't what he was talked-up to be.

here is the problem ( for me anyways )

Dion Jordan was drafted as a DE for a 4 man front when he was clearly a tweener and should have been drafted to a 3-4 team to play OLB

so he was doomed to fail before he ever got started

that does not mean he would have succeeded as a 3-4 rush backer because its not a foolproof transition

but the deck was stacked against him from the start ...

since then he has not done himself any favors with substance issues , missed meetings , team doghouse etc ..

could he play ? perhaps but at this point he could easily wash out of the league and nobody would miss him or perhaps someone gives him a league min contract and tries him out as a OLB but I wouldn't put my eggs in that basket at this late date without a contingency plan

You're right. He clearly has incredible athleticism, but he hasn't been able to show that he can convert speed to power when he has his hand in the dirt as a pass rusher at DE. Could he be much more effective standing up and coming off the edge in a 3-4? You would think so, but it really is hard to know with so little playing time from him.

He would certainly be a huge risk and isn't a guy you want to count on when they already have some concerns about other players that they count on.

Dion Jordan and Jarvis Jones are on the same level except Jarvis kept his nose clean... no thank's to both of them.

Seems like the kind of guy who could come in and eat up a lot of playing time based on the hype of signing him, but without producing results.

Or the kind of guy who could come in as a hyped offseason signing and then not play at all, and everyone wonders why the hell we signed him, then our starter gets injured and we go "Good thing we signed that guy! Now we have a player with experience and potential who can come off the bench!" only he still doesn't play and we're starting a practice squad guy instead.

Neither of those sounds very appealing to me.

The Dion Jordan (http://www.nfl.com/player/dionjordan/2539288/profile) saga is over in Miami.
The Dolphins (http://www.nfl.com/teams/miamidolphins/profile?team=MIA) waived the former No. 3 overall pick on Friday with a failed physical designation, the team announced. Jordan played in 26 games with one start for the Dolphins (http://www.nfl.com/teams/miamidolphins/profile?team=MIA), compiling 46 tackles and three sacks.
Jordan missed the past two seasons due to suspensions for violating the NFL's policy on substances of abuse. The move saves Miami $3.2 million in salary cap space.

Asked this week about Miami selecting Jordan in 2013, EVP Mike Tannenbaum -- who wasn't with the franchise when the pick was made -- had the understatement of the year:
"Obviously from where he was selected to today it's not a move that's worked out," he said, via the Palm Beach Post (http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2017/03/27/miami-dolphins-on-dion-jordan-not-a-move-thats-worked-out/). "It's pretty obvious..."
The Dolphins (http://www.nfl.com/teams/miamidolphins/profile?team=MIA) traded up for the right to select the 6-foot-6, physical freak, viewing him as the needed edge rusher to pair with Cameron Wake (http://www.nfl.com/player/cameronwake/2506314/profile).
The Dolphins (http://www.nfl.com/teams/miamidolphins/profile?team=MIA) are still searching for that rush-mate.
As a rookie, Jordan played sparingly, compiling two sacks and 26 tackles as he transitioned to defensive end. The undersized, neophyte pass-rusher looked most comfortable covering in space. But a cover linebacker wasn't the vision Miami had when they traded up to draft Jordan.
Bulking up in the offseason began the string of PED violations that spelled an end to his run in Miami.
Entering his second season, Jordan was suspended for six games. He compiled one sack in 10 appearances.
December 28, 2014, was the last time Jordan stepped on the field for a regular season game for the Dolphins (http://www.nfl.com/teams/miamidolphins/profile?team=MIA).

This article points out that talent without a proper position does not always equal success. Jordan was not a pass rusher, but was drafted to be a pass rusher. I'm thinking maybe trying to get stronger for rushing was a reason for the PEDs as well. Not condoning, just something to think about.
