Wow. so technically the average dollars per deal isnt as high as AJ Green. This is a bargain boys and girls, believe it or not.

Glad that this is all settled. AB is going to have some huge cap hits but as long as Ben is around he's worth it. I wont even care if AB makes it through the whole contract for us when Ben's gone to be honest, but for the time being, this is great news

You mean he's not being traded? (lol)

On a serious note, excellent move. When someone puts up the level of production he has the past 4 years, and he has one year deal left, you do what it takes to keep him around for a while

Which should have been a clear sign that he would sign an extentsion

Everything that is happening seems to point towards having this team competing for championships through 2021. I wonder if they've had a serious conversation with Ben?

All things also seem to point toward Villanueva signing through 2021. Perhaps a five year plan that Ben has agreed to?

Everything just has that feel to it.

Hopefully this gets Bryant's vinegar & oil flowing.

Realistically I would be surprised to get more than 2-3 additional years of Ben.

Ben will be 37 (almost 38) at the end of the 2019 season and that is the last year of his current contract.

I am guessing the AB (and if it happens the AV) extension are tied more to the length of time required to amortize the signing bonus portion of the contract for cap purposes than anticipation Ben will be around through 2021

Even having AB without Ben will still make Steeler games watchable like when we had Louis Lipps. So glad to hear about AB and great news.

Can someone explain where this puts us under the projected salary cap?

well here it: looks like his cap charge stays the same this season: http://www.steelersdepot.com/2017/02/new-contract-details-steelers-wr-antonio-brown/

Bell, Villanueva, Tuitt next?

And let us not forget this insightful column from late January :coffee:

Ron Cook: NFL salary cap should compel Steelers to trade Brown

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2017/01/29/NFL-salary-cap-should-compel-Steelers-to-trade-Brown-Antonio-wide-receiver-NFL-contract/stories/201701290090

Cook is a troll with a newspaper column who my guess is uses it to stir up hot takes that can be discussed on his sports talk radio show - because of the the way the dying newspaper industry operates these days I assume he is never going to be replaced by the P-G until he retires or dies

That's a buttload of money, but he's the best receiver in the game and it fits our "Supper Bowl in the next 2-3 years or bust" motto.

The worst thing about the deal is that Drew Rosenhaus gets even a penny out of it.

There's something like $100M invested in offense and only $50M invested in defense.

That is because the Def is still young and the offense is on to their 2nd and 3rd contracts. It will switch in 3-5 years to be heavy def investments and less offense investments. Ben will be gone, AB will be on the way out, OL will start getting replaced, Bell will probably be at the end of his contract (if he gets one.) And the Def will be well into their 2nd and 3rd contracts.

Well, half our starters on defense are still on their rookie contracts, so that makes sense. That ratio looks to reverse itself right around the time Ben is retiring, though.

Highest % allocation of payments to offense for 2017 of any NFL team according to SportTrac at 66.97% (this includes yesterday's actions)

Basically explained by what everyone said above. We have the best skill position triplets in the league and a top 3 O-line at worst. Of course thats going to be expensive. Artie Burns, Sean Davis, Javon Hargrave, Ryan Shazier, Stephon Tuitt all on rookie contracts. Gay and Harrison are being paid like aging veterans and Cockrell we got off the street after final cuts and got him for pretty much the minimium.

Still, it would be nice to add 1 FA pass rushing defender worthy of a big contract. $100Mil on offense, and $70Mil on defense?

Agreed - only cap payouts above $5 million on defense for 2017 are Heyward ($10.4 million) and Mitchell ($8.1 million)

Big ticket payments on offense above $5 million are Ben ($18.2 million), Brown ($13.6 million), Bell ($12.4 million), Pouncey ($11 million), DeCastro ($11 million), Gilbert ($7.3 million) and Green ($6.2 million) - Foster is a bargain on the last 2 yeras of his contract at $3.6 million for 2017 and 2018

Ugh Mitchell's cap number just grinds my gears. Potentially re-signing Timmons kind of does too, but im 50/50 on that one. We at least have good depth at ILB and S. We can get cheaper, more effective alternatives on the FA market and potentially even the draft to plug and play those guys to fill those slots instead of biting the bullet.

Cut Mitchell, sign Tony Jefferson. Ive read that DJ Swearinger and Jefferson both played really well for the cardinals at safety last season, and with Tyrann Mathieu at the other safety position, they wont be keeping all 3. Even signing Jefferson to a similar deal to Mitchell will be an excellent upgrade.

Let Timmons walk, give Williams his opportunity to start. He's already done that a lot his entire career anyways. He looks better in coverage than people give him credit for, and if push comes to shove we can sign a good young rising ILB like Kevin Minter for probably the same price as Timmons would have cost anyways

I don't necessarily mean that Roethlisberger is going to play for another five years. I think by signing people to these five year deals it's also going to give the organization the chance to restructure things and move things along depending on what happens with Ben. If he retires in a couple years additional years on these contracts will allow them to shuffle things around and move things to either help them save money to acquire more talent, but also to possibly get out from underneath a contract if Ben retires early and they want to start rebuilding again.

I should have better clarified that.

You would think with the talent on offense we would be the highest scoring team in the league by a touchdown a game.
