Fair rankings - Noll is the best coach in terms of Super Bowl appearances but the second half of his career was mediocre and Clayton, who covered the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Press (RIP) from 1976 -86, said regular season record and impact on the game were taken into account.

Lombardi at #1 won 5 titles (3 pre-Super Bowl) in 7 years and Belichick at #2 has sustained excellence for a long time even with the Spygate taint. Arguably could flip Walsh and Noll at 3 and 4 based on Clayton's criteria.

I would rank Joe Gibbs at #6 ahead of Don Shula at #5 for winning three Lombardis with Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien at QB during a time getting to the Super Bowl from the NFC required going through the Ditka Bears, Parcellls Giants, and Montana/Walsh 49ers

Poor Barry Switzer lol.

My vote will always go to Joe Gibbs as #1. Three Super Bowl titles with 3 different QBs, none of which will ever sniff the HOF. Sorry but that beats Lombardi, Shula, Noll and Belichic; they all had HOF QBs.

Different eras for all these coaches. Hard to compare. Didn't need a human calculator with a rocket arm and a sub 3 second release at QB in some of those eras. Must have one now.

Gibbs had the Hogs up front. That helped a ton. Also Rypien was the MVP of the league I think. Williams had an amazing 1 or 2 year run also. DOn't know about Thiesman, but I bet if we ask him he will tell us how good he was. Might even mention that he broke his leg once. Don't know for sure - doesn't usually come up.
