Steelers coach Mike Tomlin admitted he will “look hard” this week at potential changes in the kickoff return unit after the team had poor field position following three returns in the first half Sunday.

Teams have started kicking the ball short of the end zone to prevent the Steelers from taking a knee and getting possession at the 25.
Drives began at the Steelers 15, 17 and 18 following two returns by Fitzgerald Toussaint and one by Sammie Coates, who brought the ball out of the end zone for 22 yards.

The Steelers ranked 17th in the NFL during the regular season, averaging 21.5 yards per return. But in the past three games, including the wild-card game, the Steelers averaged 16.3 yards on nine returns (not counting an onside kick recovery vs. the Dolphins).

“We have to do a better job,” Tomlin said. “We have not been special in special teams. A lot has to do with circumstances.” ..............

All he has to do is fire Danny Smith...as everyone has been suggesting for a long time now.

Our special teams have always been horrible even before Danny Smith.

Remember in 2009 when the Steelers gave 4 kick return for a TD in 5 games or something like that!

His coverage units started getting better in recent seasons but then digressed this season. He really is a horrible coach...

Don't. Return. Kickoffs.

True but if they have to field it before the goal line, then they have no choice to return it.

Our opponents are catching on to kick it short and let these non returners get to the 15. SMDH.

And about half the time, it gets marked back inside the 10 because someone was guilty of a block in the back.

Danny Smith. His name gives me the Heebie Jeebies in the same fashion that Sean Mahan and Isaac Redman do, the 2008 and 2009 Draft Classes...ugh.

Tomlin is acknowledging that 'SPECIAL TEAM' sucks and needs 'LOOKED AT' ? WTF !? Did his ass finally watch a film ? Did he finally look at a game and see that there were games we lost in the past because of a SPECIAL TEAM play or lack of ? OMG ! Play off time and our HC is waking up on SPECIAL TEAM shit ! Hey Mike.....head's up....."kick out of bounds Sunday, DON'T kick to HILL !" We have no one who will tackle him and they'll get a fast 6.

Or... the best PR/KR in the NFL is his upcoming opponent, and a reporter asked him how they plan on stopping said "best PR/KR".

So, you want to give KC the ball on their own 40?

Better than missed tackles and giving them 6

I'd prefer Boswell try to get it out of the back of the EZ. Of course, I'm sure if he does that with any regularity, he'll have to take another "random" PED test right away...

was just looking at Boswell's touchback numbers and interestingly enough, he damn near doubled his percentage of touchbacks from last season (61.25% of his kick offs were for touchbacks in 2016 vs. 35.16% of his kickoffs for touchbacks in 2015). Damn, talk about improvement.

However, his percentage of kickoffs for touchbacks has gone down considerably in December/January (45.16%) compared to the rest of the season (67.27%), which i guess is expected considering the lower ball pressure in the winter. The game isnt too cold but the rain could really fuck things up. They should just let Boz do whatever kick he's mostly comfortable doing that day. In a perfect world it seems like a shorter kick with good hangtime would be the safest bet

Its a better option than letting Hill set up a return and scoring 6...lol.
