View Full Version : Dunlap: Appreciate The Steelers Coaching Situation Today

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – Black Monday is here.

Mike McCoy is out in San Diego.

Chip Kelly’s experiment in the Bay Area is finished; what a dud.

Gary Kubiak resigned in Denver.

Jeff Fisher was already gone in Los Angeles. Same with Gus Bradley in Jacksonville and Rex Ryan in Buffalo — done, finished, kaput.

Who knows if the list will grow? Will Chuck Pagano be shown the door in Indianapolis and/or Bill O’Brien get the boot in Houston in the coming days? Who knows, but the NFL-watching populace will keep a pulse on it.

What I do know is this: This time of year in the NFL really drives home what for me is one of the most incredible statistics in all of sports. You know the one, the one where the Pittsburgh Steelers have had just three coaches since 1969.

Do we appreciate that enough in Pittsburgh?

Do we really appreciate that enough in Pittsburgh?

I think it is appreciated. Very often it gets overlooked because, with that consistency comes winning, and with winning comes feelings of entitlement. When you break it down, in the super bowl era, the Steelers have been the most consistently winning team in the NFL. And that includes those 5 years in the 80s. No other franchise knows our success. So when we have bad games, or even a bad season, Steeler fans want to know why and fix it. NOW! Which brings us to the blame game carousel. The comparing of Noll vs Cowher vs Tomlin is a conversation only we Steeler fans can relate to. I guess Ravens fans can debate Billick vs Harbaugh but that's about as close as it gets. Do the Pats yearn for Pete Carroll's return? Or maybe some Packer fans consider Lombardi, Holmgren, and McCarthy as equals in the debate. But over the entire course of the NFL(super bowl era) the Steelers are the standard. And I think the players, coaches, and media throughout that era recognize and appreciate it too. Even if we fans forget at times.

This ties into the Todd Haley discussion. There are rumors that he's being considered for a HC slot elsewhere. If he sucks as much as some here seem to think, he should be very easy to replace. Me personally... I don't think he sucks.

He won't be hired. The rest of the league isn't stupid.

And he's out of friends.

Steelers own past history proves hiring Haley would be a mistake.

And so far? It has been.

Steelers should look to see who is available to coach STs. Again a glaring weakness. Hopefully we pick up somebody to address the problem like on the OL instead of pushing it back another season.

We've had numerous chances to bring back April and they never did.

If he ever wants to get back in the NFL? Frank Gansz, Jr is who I'd hire.

*Snort* Yeah... like no team in the NFL ever makes stupid HC hiring decisions. :coffee:
Your opinions are so loud you're confusing them with facts. You should probably work on that.

14 job openings the last two years.

And yet, Todd Haley can't get two interviews, much less a job offer.

When your nuts off the field? Teams won't hire you as head coach.

Rex isn't nuts. He's just a toe sucker.

Haley guts houses, Haley doesn't pay dog sitter bills, Haley misses team flights, Haley's in bars until 3 AM the night before our 1 PM home opener (then sends in the wrong people on the first red zone drive which results in a fumble, was he hungover?).

Haley and his wife are swingers and she sends out nudes. They also claim she had a rat in her salad from Mickey D's.

Last but not least? Haley claims Scott Pioli bugged his cell phone, the cell phone he had BEFORE he went to Kansas City.

Just the type of guy I want running my team.

Tomlin is Good, Butler is average with potential, Haley is Excellent, Munchak is Hall of Fame. Can't really complain too much...lol.

I wouldn't go so far as to say excellent, but he has definitely helped Ben get to the next level, and also has helped this offense be able to put points on the board, especially in the redzone. Remember those years when the you were disappointed the Steelers got into the redzone rather than scoring from 20+ yards out, because it meant a field goal rather than a TD?

Ben was already there.

and also has helped this offense be able to put points on the board, especially in the redzone.

Red zone:

Arians:

3rd, 14th, 22nd, 15th, 17th.

Haley:

12th, 16th, 19th, 13th, 12th.

Basically the same, and Haley has never cracked the top 10 much less the top three.

Sure. We have the most threads containing why we don't need Rosey Nix and 3 TE formations but we do need Joe Thomas and Darren Sproles.

Dom should have included that. :chuckle:
