View Full Version : Ben Roethlisberger: Physical practices to blame for Steelers' injuries

The Steelers might have one of the league's most explosive offenses, but a rash of injuries have left them woefully thin at key positions on both sides of the ball. Yes, it's football, and injuries are as much a part of the game as the forward pass, but Ben Roethlisberger thinks there's more to it than plain bad luck.
"We have a lot of injuries," the Steelers quarterback told 93.7 The Fan on Tuesday, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I think a lot of our stuff stems from we're one of the most physical football teams in training camp, in practice, you know. We do more hitting than most teams do and more [practices in] pads."

This is being blown out of proportion but I think that Ben should be a bit more careful about what he's saying to the media. I'm sure that Tomlin isn't happy about him saying this.

Those are my thoughts. Of the course the media is going to run with this and probably make it sound worse then it really is. I seriously doubt Ben was trying to throw anyone under the bus he was just stating his opinion.

I do think though Tomlin may feel like if Ben is feeling this way or even speaking on behalf of some of his teammates, then why don't you come into my office and discuss it behind closed doors.

No matter what, we are 4-1 and hopefully this blows over and we can get healthy.

Tomlin already responded.

Tomlin didn't have a problem with Roethlisberger airing his complaint publicly.

Said Tomlin: "Man, Ben's been around here long enough to have an opinion and also express it."

Who cares? Tomlin certainly doesn't. It does seem that Ben's sports medicine knowledge is less than impressive.

Lack of Physical Practices is what is leading to injuries. Because of Goodell's brainless stance on "safety", These guys are not in playing shape come the season, so we get sloppier defense and less tackling.

I agree 100%. It's the lack of contact in practice that's leading to the injuries and poor tackling. I don't know why the NFL can't see this.

I'm glad that Tomlin responded like that. Now the media has nowhere to run with it.

These guys are in better shape at the beginning of the season than ever before. During the seventies and eighties, offseason was exactly that, the offseason. There was very little if no training during that time. Camp was literally all about getting players in shape. So no, that's not the problem at all.

On the other hand, the less physical practices and cut down from two-a-days where they have to focus more on scheme rather than reviewing simple skills IS an issue—of course, that's also got a lot to do with ESPNhitting rather than worrying about form-tackling.

This is all really a ploy between Haley and Ben. The ruse of Ben not getting along with Haley has finally quieted down, and now they are conspiring to have Tomlin fired, so that Haley can become head coach.

OTOH, it is just a slow news day and Ben is taking the media for a ride, like he always does. Hope he is keeping a secret log that he will publish once he retires.
