View Full Version : History bodes well for Steelers after disaster games.

This team tends to respond well to beatdowns and looking like absolute trash. Most Especially in seasons with some expectations.

1979: Destroyed by San Diego 35-7.
After: Win 6 out of last 7 games afterwards to win the Super Bowl.

1994: Lose 26-9 to Cowboys at Three Rivers.
After: Reel off 12-3 stretch and advance to AFC Title Game.

1995: Lose a 27-9 stinker to the Bengals in Pittsburgh.
After: Win 8 of last 9 games and advance to Super Bowl.

1997: Destroyed 37-7 by Dallas at Three Rivers.
After: Finish season 11-5 and advance to AFC Title Game.

2005: Destroyed 26-7 against Indianapolis.
After: Win 8 of last 9 games to win Super Bowl XL.

2008: Lost 15-6 in Philadelphia. Ben is sacked eight times.
After: 13-3 run to win Super Bowl XLIII.

2010: 39-26 beatdown at hands of New England at home.
After: Win 6 of next 7 games en route to Super Bowl XLV.

2011: Lost 35-7 in season opener at Baltimore.
After: Finish season 12-4. Injuries finally did the team in, though.

2013: 55-31 Destruction in New England. Defense surrenders a team-worst 600 yards.
After: Win 6 of next 8 games to push for a playoff spot in the final day.

2014: 31-10 Embarrassment to the Browns
After: 8-2 stretch to close out the season and win AFC North, but Bell injury kills them against Baltimore.

Now it's 2016, and the Steelers have suffered their worst deficit loss since 1997. A 34-3 shellacking against the Eagles in Philadelphia, and looked absolutely horrid in the effort.

Does this history mean anything now? No. I'm just pointing out that this team notoriously bounces back big after getting smashed.

1989: Open the season with two losses by a combined score of 92-10. Make the playoffs and beat the Oilers in overtime.

Speaking of that 2008 game, some believe that game was worse that this past game. Dale Lolley is one of them.

I somewhat agree. Just this one is fresher in my memory.

This.

Without doing the research and looking at it very quickly, I think all those teams listed there have better defenses than this current team.

The 2014 team's defense wasn't that good but we're missing Bongtavious who propelled the team to some wins.

The 2013 team's defense is similar to this one: can't sack and can't get turnovers.

All the other teams had good to great defenses.

True... but, none of those teams had BB, AB, and Bell.

Great point!

We score the 30 points per game we are fully capable of and we'll be fine.

No but some had BB, Bettis, Parker and Ward. Not as explosive as the BB of today, Bell and Brown but they got the job done...

I almost feel bad for the Chiefs for the beating that's coming their way this week. Almost.

We're not as bad as we looked against the Eagles and not as good as we looked against the Chiefs. But regardless this was a nice redemption game!:tt03:

The steelers have often bounced back under Tomlin after an embarrassing loss. The Steelers are not as good today, but they are not bad as last week.

The only thing is needed is consistency.

Another team that plays the Steelers tough.

Injuries are piling up. LBs and OL are thin

I always want the team we play to have won the previous week - I want them fat and happy, perhaps a tad over confident and full of themselves. I DON'T want to play a team that got beaten badly or "cheated" out of a win, I don't want to play a team that's angry and out for blood, like the team the Chiefs faced last night. That's always dangerous.

They got dominated at home by the Seahawks. They got a late fumble recovery for a TD to make the score look respectable. Their offense has been a mess and their secondary hasn't been much better.

I don't think that their team is good outside of their DL, which is very good. Their offense has some weapons but they're very inconsistent and prone to mistakes.

We need to stay with the aggressive defensive scheme that we showed last night. If we sit back like against Philly, even Fitzpatrick will pick us apart.

Where has it been hiding? The front line of their defense is pretty good. Their secondary has been awful. Their WRs are talented but Fitzmagic has thrown about 112 interceptions this season. Forte does Forte things that can be dangerous.

All that being said, the Steelers will give up 15 sacks and Fitzy will throw for 415 yards.

Forte could be seriously hurt. That will be helpful. For whatever reason it seems like none of the typical shutdown corners feel like being shutdown corners this season. Marcus Peters just got beat like a drum by Coates. Sherman had 2 picks but also gave up tons of catches against Marshall. Chris Harris has given up multiple TD's after AB killed him and he hadn't given up a TD pass in like 2 years before that. And now we have Revis who has been awful. Hopefully he doesnt choose this week to redeem himself

All teams with very good defensive linemen that can pressure the passer with just four are a threat to derail any offense.

This will most likely be a very tough game.

Their O-Line is good, Fitpatrick is decent, their WRs Decker, Marshall and Enunwa are good, Forte does his thing...on paper, this team is very good. On the field they've been something else. Like you said, in typical fashion, they'll have a breakout game against the Steelers...lol.
