The Patriots had wide receiver Julian Edelman (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5440/julian-edelman) as their backup quarterback last night. He might have to start next week.

According to Mike Petraglia of WEEI.com, Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/11341/jacoby-brissett) suffered a torn thumb ligament (https://twitter.com/Trags/status/779385135774982145) in the second half of last night’s win over the Texans, and may need surgery to stabilize the injury.........

At this point if Belichick held a pregame drawing at midfield and invited the winning fan to come on down to play QB it would not surprise me if the Pats won

And the Patriots will still go 4-0. I read that it's not that serious and both QBs will most likely be back for Week 4. I would love to see
Edelman just run the read option all game...lol.

IMO that speaks more to the quality, or lack of it, within the NFL as an overall product than the supposed "genius" of Belichick. Lots of shitty teams in general, particularly in the AFC.

It's really not a new development either - even beyond Goodell's incompetence and gross mismanagement, the on field product has been declining for years. And as someone else who was fortunate enough to see 1970s NFL football first hand, I'm sure you'll probably agree.

Providing Ben stays relatively healthy, if the Steelers don't win at LEAST 12 games this season against this field, I will consider it to be a major disappointment.

And speaking to the thread topic, it couldn't have happened to a more deserving franchise...

For obvious reasons I loved 70s football but there were lots of crap teams then as well, given that the Raiders, Steelers, Rams, Cowboys and Vikings seemed to be in the playoffs every year while bottom feeders never made it.

I agree quality of play has gone down - differences now are that free agency makes it hard to keep a team together, opening games of the regular season are ragged due to starters having limited play in preseason, rules changes are turning the game into basketball in cleats, and practice time has declined due to CBA requirements together along with injury concerns.

I think that has always been the case. There have always been a select few teams that contend every year for a string of years while everyone else remains mediocre to crap. Sure there are surprise teams, but either they a. become contenders for years while some other team falls off the face of the earth or go right back to mediocrity

Frankly, the way things are going for the Pats, they could start anybody in week 4 and win, especially at home against the Bills

I think the Browns are one of the worst sports teams in history at this time.

In regards to Belichick, does spygate taint his ability? For me, you just never know if he is still breaking the rules.

If he isn't breaking the rules, you really have to give him credit for adapting to the situation. I just hate the idea of giving cheaters and people with no integrity / character credit for anything.

Thread winner.

And there's still the little matter of the 36-44 record during his tenure as the Browns' HC, and the fact that his "disciples" (Weis, Crennel, McDaniels, etc., etc.) wind up being abject failures themselves whenever they become HCs elsewhere.

In a similar vein, you also have personnel "genius" Scott Pioli who not only failed in grand fashion in a similar role in KC, he also ran his front office like the Nixon White House (http://deadspin.com/5876426/the-kansas-city-chiefs-might-have-the-worst-workplace-in-america).

Something is still rotten in the state of Denmark, if you ask me.

Yeah, yeah, I know - JELLUSS HAYTUR!!!111!11!!!!1!!!!! :jerkit:

I still think that Belichick had something to do with the deflating of the footballs and that numerous times - coincidentally of course - there are problems with an opposing team's headsets in Gilette Stadium.

Belichick probably still cheats like he did with Spygate, but now takes more care not to get caught.

Of course he did - he's the biggest micro-manager in the league. If someone so much as farts in Gillette Stadium, he knows about it.

The first 4-5 weeks of the seasons anymore are glorified preseason. The new CBA allows so little actual practice that the guysa re still warming up early int he season and that easily played to helping the Pats without Brady. It also helps that the Texans completely imploded on themselves
