LANDOVER, Md. -- The age. Always the age.
"I knew somebody was going to bring that up," said running back DeAngelo Williams after a reporter referenced his 33 years of age after the Pittsburgh Steelers' 38-16 win over the Washington Redskins on Monday night.
If Williams played like most 33-year-olds, he wouldn't get the age questions. He'd be out of the league. Instead, Williams faces questions about improving with age, which seem fitting after he poured 143 yards and two touchdowns on the Redskins defense.
Williams picked up just where he left off last season, giving Pittsburgh a late-game workhorse with a scorer's touch in the red zone.
The Steelers consider Williams, who logged 26 carries against Washington, a luxury with Le'Veon Bell out. That's five multi-touchdown games for Williams in his 11 starts with Pittsburgh.
"We're fortunate to have a guy like that," right tackle Marcus Gilbert said. "He's a great player."
Williams and Willie Parker are the only Steelers since 1960 with at least 100 rushing yards in back-to-back season openers. And Williams did his work with minimal help, as Fitz Toussaint logged three caries for 6 yards. Williams led all NFL rushers in yardage in Week 1.
