Before the latest return of the freakishly athletic, ferociously powerful and fiercely competitive Maurkice Pouncey, the NFL's best center flashed the famous smile that betrays his intimidating stature. It happened on the day the Steelers reported to St. Vincent for a 51st training camp in Latrobe.
As Pouncey carried gear into a dorm, a kid holding a microphone in one hand and wearing a cast around his opposite arm approached.
“What did you do?” Pouncey asked Xiah Zepeda, a 7-year-old tasked with interviewing Steelers players for the team's website.
Rain had soaked away the day. Players were irked. Reporters trying to speak with them were drenched. Nobody was having fun other than Zepeda, who behaved as one might expect a Pittsburgh kid would around Pittsburgh's beloved football players.
When nobody is having fun, little things go unnoticed. But linebacker Lawrence Timmons, Pouncey's occasional sparring mate in practice, said later in camp: “If Pouncey is around, fun will follow.” ............
