Every year around the NFL Draft (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl-draft) you hear the usual comments coming from fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/pittsburgh-steelers).
"Why can't the Steelers ever draft rookies who can contribute from Day 1?"

"That is a nice pick, too bad he won't play for another 3 years."
While this has a lot to do with the fact the Steelers are usually picking in the back end of the draft, I'll focus solely on the comments. You know, why would anyone want to bring logic into such an argument?

It seems to me things started changing once Lebeau went to Tennessee. It's hard to believe Tomlin had much influence over the defense when Lebeau was DC.

The depth and difficulty of Lebeau's defense was well-known. It was seemingly impossible for rookies to be ready to start their first year, so they were relegated to sub packages. I think of Keenan Lewis - he finally got the chance to start in the final year of his rookie contract. But the sample size of his play was so small that the Steelers didn't really know what kind of player he was.

"The system" worked because we actually had great players on Defense back then, so it didn't really matter if the young guys got on the field or not.

But when the old guard started to break down and it came down to developing the next-in-line, that was when Lebeau's system ran into a wall. So the D dropped off a cliff come 2013 and 2014.

To add to that, and not to take away from the intelligence of the current defensive roster, but we lost a lot of high IQ defensive players in a short period of time, Farrior, Foote, Clark, Troy, Ike, and Smith. Tough group to replace from a physical standpoint, but as much, if not more, from an intelligence one.

This defense has a lot of potential and it could be our best defense since 2010.

Of course, I am afraid that this defense be a disaster since sometimes last year we were lucky, but at least there has hope that this defense be good.
