Sometimes Ben Roethlisberger calls the plays, and that's the way Todd Haley wants it.
Sometimes Haley calls the plays, and that's the way Roethlisberger likes it.
Other times, it is a little of both — it just depends.
Regardless of how the Steelers' no-huddle offense is constructed, it is a snapshot of the relationship between Haley and Roethlisberger — a lot of give-and-take and plenty of trust.
“There is just a level of trust and understanding of what I want and what he wants,” Roethlisberger said. “We really work well together.”
Haley quickly realized that working well together means to sometimes turn control of the offense over to Roethlisberger. In an ego-driven win-now league with insecurity that goes along with being an offensive coordinator, it isn't something you see all the time.
For Haley, who has been part of coaching some of the NFL's best passing games, it wouldn't seem easy to entrust the offense to a quarterback, albeit a possible Hall-of-Fame quarterback.
Instead, it has been just the opposite.
“I want to win,” Haley said. “There are some insecure people in this business who aren't comfortable in turning it over, but I said since Day One, even from an idea standpoint, I don't care who comes up with ideas. It doesn't matter. It is how we find the best idea that gives us the best chance to win because we all work too hard not to put yourself in position to win.”
