View Full Version : No more Antwon Blake, so which Steelers' cornerback is going to seize the job?

Steelers fans erupted on social media with each missed tackle from former Steelers cornerback Antwon Blake. Calls for Brandon Boykin, the embattled backup, grew stronger with each passing week, culminating in Boykin’s insertion in the lineup.
It didn’t depose Blake, however, and Boykin himself left this offseason the same way Blake did — Boykin, after being released by the Panthers, is now with the Bears and Blake is with the Titans.
The biggest question facing the Steelers this offseason surrounded their depleted cornerbacks group, one in which veteran Will Gay stands unchallenged as the best of the unit, but highlighted by inexperience.

Cockrell will start opposite Gay on the outside, and I think he will have a find season there! Golson in the slot. They used to shift Gay into the slot also, but I think that will need to be Golson and Burns in the slot positions on multiple WR sets leaving Gay and Cockrell on the outsides. The good thing is we have more talent at the S positions to maybe mix up some coverages. I like where our backfield is heading, hopefully they can improve as the season progresses like last year and we have a solid grp playing at the top of their game heading into the playoffs (as the #1 seed of course!)

I assume Cockrell and Gay will start on day 1.

Like PB said, Grant hasn't shown much so far in camp. Still early though.

Bears put Brandon Boykin on injured reserve

Brandon Boykin #25 of the Pittsburgh Steelers carries the ball during the 1st half of the *game at Heinz Field on October 18, 2015 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Brandon Boykin’s strange year in the NFL has come to an end.
The Bears announced this evening that Boykin has been placed on injured reserve.
That news comes as a surprise. Boykin didn’t practice today with a pectoral injury, and that injury was apparently more serious than it first appeared. Boykin insisted in June that he was healthy and that talk of a hip injury was false.
The Bears were Boykin’s fourth team in a year: Last season, he was traded from the Eagles to the Steelers in training camp. He hit free agency in March, signed with the Panthers, but was then cut by the Panthers two months later. He then spent a month without an NFL home before signing with the Bears last week. Now he’s done playing for the Bears before he started.

With Blake gone, who will be this year's corner whose playing time gets discussed endlessly months after the season ends :wink02:

Well, with Golson now pretty much done, Grant better realize this is his chance. We will get someone else off the waiver wire though. Wonder how well Davis will do. At least we have 2 Safeties that can start, a very promising rookie that can cover and Shark (as well as W Allen just a phone call away).
