Used to be that the San Jose Sharks were as reliable as an atomic clock.
Virtually every spring, they would enter the Stanley Cup playoffs with great expectations, occasionally cast as a Stanley Cup favorite.
And, invariably, they would find a way to stumble out of the postseason, often in a humbling — if not humiliating — manner.
Like two years ago, when they became the fourth team in NHL history to lose a best-of-seven series after winning the first three games.
The Sharks came up with a temporary solution for those exasperating exits in 2015, when they simply failed to qualify for the playoffs, but hit on a far more satisfying formula this season and will be matched against the Penguins in the Stanley Cup final.............
