Titans cut pre-Marcus Mariota starting QB Zach Mettenberger
At one point Zach Mettenberger (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/27706/) looked like he had a future with the Tennessee Titans (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/ten/).

Less than two years later, he was cut.

On Monday the Titans dumped Mettenberger, who started six games as a rookie in 2014 and showed some decent things for a sixth-round pick. But the Titans weren't too interested in keeping him around to see if he improved. Marcus Mariota (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/28390/) was drafted in 2015 to be the starter of the future, veteran Matt Cassel (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7406/) was signed as a backup this season and Mettenberger is done.

We should sign him now. He'd be a good backup to Ben.

Been discussing this article some today. I think we should at least make a phone call and see if he's interested in coming to camp. IMO, already an upgrade over the current guys.

I'd sign him. Let him compete with Jones and Gradkowski in preseason and cut the worst one...which I don't think would be Mettenberger...

He was on a pretty shitty team in Tennessee when he started the 10 games or whatever it was.

Yep. Backup job should be wide open.

At worst he would still be a better no. 3 than Landry and at best he would be a solid backup

I'm not so sure that Jones AND Mettenberger aren't better than Gradkowski at this stage...

I see nothing wrong with bringing him in to kick the tires.

I don't know, anyone is better than Landry

My thoughts exactly. And he started 6 games at TN. In which he wasn't that bad, individually.

Mettenberger was bad on a bad team.

Landry Jones is the #2 QB now not Grad. I'm sure the position is open for competition yadda yadda.

I think Mettenberger would be bad on a good team too. I laughed when he threw the ball out of bounds on 2nd and goal vs the Steelers then got a TD on 3rd and goal. "Are you watching Ben?! The rookie knows you don't have to force it every time." Haha.

That is, if Gradkowski makes it to the regular season healthy.

He is getting close to Batchwich Syndrome.

Not sure what the rules are for signing players off waivers but read that the Browns had first option but passed, and then the Chargers had the next shot and picked him up. So not a true FA it seems.

From wikipedia (not always accurate but I'm lazy)

During the off season each team has several days to file such claims. Claiming teams are assigned the rights to or contracts via a priority system based on inverse order of record

Didn't know this:

As of 2008, at the conclusion of a season in which a veteran with four years of service is claimed via waivers, veterans with a no-trade clause in their contracts may declare themselves free agents. Any other veteran with four years of service can declare himself a free agent at the conclusion of the season subsequent to the season in which they were claimed on waivers if they remain under a claimed contract.[2]

Whis is back as OC of the Bolts. No surprise about this move.
