Didn't think he'd fall out of round 2. Really like this guy, John Mitchell seems to love him.

Great pick. Excellent value.

I like picks 2 and 3, but not so fond of the first pick. Oh well, it all remains to be seen.

Well, I can't argue with the pick. Small school status kept him down but he looked good at the Senior Bowl and pre-draft. Has the potential to be a very good DE in our system in some kind of rotation with Tuitt and Heyward, to prevent those guys from getting gassed. For now good DL depth, can he potentially play Nose too?

i dont see why not. Sure, he's smaller (309lb) but the NFL is moving towards athleticism at the NT position anyways. And remember guys like Jay Ratliff and Randy Starks? They were about the same size as Hargrave and they dominated. Hargrave is a way better athlete than those guys. His motor and ability to hold his base is off the charts

Great pick. Javon Hargrave is 6-1 3/8, 309 ran a 4.9 40 with 34.5 vertical jump. This from a defensive tackle, better 3-tech w NT potential

89. Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/pittsburghsteelers/profile?team=PIT): Javon Hargrave (http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/javon-hargrave?id=2555239), DT, South Carolina State
NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah: "He has an enormous, powerful base and he easily holds the point of attack. He has an explosive get-off as a pass rusher and he knows how to finish. He will get gassed if left on the field too long. Overall, Hargrave is one of the most disruptive interior defenders in the draft."

I like how Mitchell mentions that McCullers is ready to go and they like where he's at. He's a different guy this year.

That's exciting to hear.

If Hargrave works out like I think he can, the Steelers will be able to get consistent pressure up the middle on quarterbacks. They will also be able to keep everyone fresh by rotating players in and out, and Heyward and Tuitt will be fresh at the end of games to help seal the deal.

I love this pick, and have had a man-crush on Hargrave from the first time I saw him play.

I don't know a lot about Hargrave but the thing that I love is how excited Mitchell is to have him on our team. It's like he just got a new toy and can't wait to play with it.

I'm very excited to see what our defense can do with these 3 new guys (plus Golson).

The best defenses in the league are being and have been built around a solid D line rotation. Sounds like this guy can play all the positions.

Look, I love this kids attitude and Athleticism. But great Athleticism is easy to find. But lets get real...the guy has super short Arm reach, which could kill him in the Pro's. And his level of competition is not even as good as most 5A High School players. Not to mention where will he play in a 3-4 set. Cause no way can I...or anyone else with even a small amount of football knowledge see him ever being a NT. He is at best a RAW Long term project.

You do know that some former Hall of Fame players came from his school....right? Including ex-Steeler great Donnie Shell.

Not exactly 5A high school players.

I wrote this elsewhere:

I heard Merril Hoge on the radio, talking about Carson Wentz’s transition to the NFL. Hoge averred that “a player is a player, no matter the level of competition.” His point was that if a player from a small-school (Division II, FSC) can play, then he can play. He cited Randy Moss, Khalil Mack, and Jerry Rice. After hearing this, I decided upon Javon Hargrave, because the kid can play. He had 16 sacks as a junior and 13.5 as a senior. Despite those gaudy sack numbers, Hargrave has almost no pass-rush moves; he has gotten by on being the best athlete on the field. The good news is that you cannot teach athleticism, but you can indeed teach pass-rush moves. Lastly, at the East-West shrine game, Hargrave was the best lineman on the field.

At this point the Steelers new model for a defensive prospect is clear. Off the charts athleticism, mobile/quick, and someone who projects to have not yet reached the peak of their abilities.

I can not believe this guy was there in the late 3rd. Thought for sure he would have to be the 2nd round pick.

Notice how people dismissing this pick dont even mention that he dominated in the East-West Shrine game or the Senior Bowl where he obliterated the notion that he's only good against his lower level competition

Former Steeler draft pick, " Tee Martin " was awarded the best player at the Senior Bowl, as well as MVL in the East/West Shrine game by throwing for 348 Yards in only 14 attempts with 4 TD's....Ahh, exactly how many Super Bowls did Tee take us too ?

Yeah I thought so!1

And just to prove your point, you cite a fantasy football nerd site (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/forums/showthread.php/25645-NFL-Draft-Day-2016-thread?p=549430#post549430) (PFF) that graded him as a solid B+ pick. :noidea:

do i really need to cite the number of successful players that played well in both the senior bowl and east/west shrine game. and combine that with the number of players that have matched Hargrave's athletic metrics and production?

The difference is a quarterback has the opportunity to take advantage of a mistake anyone on the defense makes. He can fumble the ball and have a RB pick it up and run for a TD. He can throw a -2 yard screen pass that turns into an 85 yard TD. He can see a blown coverage and throw the ball to a WR that doesn't have a defender within 20 yards of him.

A defensive lineman goes head to head with the best offensive linemen in the country on every snap. He had many snaps against offensive linemen with very good talent, and he outplayed every one of them. Because you are able to see how he did from snap to snap with a clear picture of how he held up on every play, you get a much truer evaluation of the player's talent level.

Daniel Jeremiah on Hargrave, one of the picks he loved.

Round 3, pick 89 - DT Javon Hargrave (http://www.nfl.com/player/javonhargrave/2555239/profile), Steelers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/pittsburghsteelers/profile?team=PIT):Hargrave, from South Carolina State, was one of my favorite players to study. If he would have played at a Division I program, he would have gone in the first round. He was one of the most dynamic interior pass rushers in the draft. He had 29.5 sacks over the past two seasons. That is big-time production. If you look at his testing numbers, they stack up favorably with a lot of the best interior defensive linemen from the past two drafts.
