View Full Version : TPOP: A'Jarrandrew Robillingseed

Here is my latest article for The Point of Pittsburgh. It outlines the DT/DE prospects who may (or may not) be there at pick #25.

The Bouillabaisse of A'Jarrandrew Robillinseed
by Tiger Rowan

As I have mentioned before, the Steelers need an additional defensive lineman, who can play nose tackle and also rotate at defensive end. Considering that the nose tackle was only on the field for 30% of the snaps, a player who can also be a part of the rotation at defensive end is critical. Cameron Heyward played 88% of the defensive snaps and Stephon Tuitt played 78% of the snaps. By season’s end, those two players were worn out, and in turn their play diminished, which affected the play of the entire defense. Moreover, when Heyward and/or Tuitt were given a breather, teams would readily move the ball on the Steelers. This can best be exemplified by Denver’s lone touchdown drive in last season’s playoff game.

There are a plethora of defensive linemen in this draft. So much so, that a “first round” type of player can be found in the second round. Ergo, one could say that it would be more logical to wait to draft a defensive lineman, such as Austin Johnson (Penn St.), Javon Hargrave (South Carolina St.), or Adolphus Washington (Ohio St.) at pick 58. That is very true, very logical. Then again, at pick 25, one could get a “top fifteen” player… which is what I would prefer, and thus, those are the players on whom I shall focus my attention.

Didn't Mayock say this is the best crop of defensive linemen he's seen in 40 years?

I see a valid argument for drafting DL in the first two rounds, especially when we are picking late in both rounds and have an opportunity for first round talent for both picks.

Conversely, while I am fine with the secondary or LB in either round 1 or 2, I would be disappointed if we did not grab a defensive lineman in either round.

Wow, a classless Bengals fan.

Why don't you do something different instead of acting like all the other assholes that post on Steelers message boards? Oh that's right.....you're a Bengal's fan.

Do you have any tears left after getting raped on national TV by your own thugs? The crying and the whining and the tears and the bitching and the moaning and the complaining......:rofl2:

Here's a great idea in the soft mind of this......ahem.....BunglesGirl....."Let's go to a Steelers message board and make fun of someone that gets his writing published so everyone will think we're really clever and completely over the meltdown of our beloved Bungles against a team playing without half of their players due to injury at home in the pouring rain. Yeah, let's try to make fun of a franchise and their fans that has completely owned us for 50 years in any games that really matter. I know, I'm going to march right into that forum and make everyone forget that we haven't won a playoff game in 26 years by acting tough and insulting people. I'm going to support my thugs that lose us as many games as they win because I'm a complete moron from Cincinnati that doesn't know the first thing about football. I'm going to really show them what an idiot I am because I don't seem to realize that my team hasn't won anything since before I was born in the backseat of an El Camino."

#1. Cincinnati, Ohio
David Ralph Hoffman, owner of Merlin’s Pest Control, says if you don’t know someone who has had a bedbug problem, you don’t live in Cincinnati. At Merlin’s they rate their horror stories on a scale of 1 to 10. The worst was an apartment occupied by someone who bragged about the last time he’d had a bath (not recently). The apartment was also occupied by about 100,000 bedbugs, Hoffman says, kept in check only by an equal number of German cockroaches. “The one we had that we call our 9.5, the gentleman was a World War II vet and pale, sick, dying, grumpy as hell—and we found over 50 bedbugs in the hat he was wearing.”

Indeed. This is the best DT/DE class since 2001. I'd be willing to be that 10 of them become All Pros (at some point in their careers). And... I'd like 2 of them.

My current thought:
R1: SS or DT/DE
R2: DT/DE or SS
R3: CB
R4: DE pass-rusher

So the value on the DL runs a lot deeper than just rounds 1 & 2?....

R1 & R2 is full of juggernauts akin to Casey Hampton, Richard Seymour, & Kris Jenkins.

R3 & R4 is littered with specialists (guys who are not necessarily "every down" players, but do one thing extremely well). Antuan Woods can stuff the run; not a pass-rusher. Carl Nassib is a pass-rusher; not so good against the run.

Don't get me wrong there are some really good players to come out of that school under the Saban tenure - but - but - there are also so players who really disappointed relative to their draft hype. Many think that Ragland will continue this unfortunate tradition. Those DT's though...that appears to be another story!

My theory is that Saban chews them up. By the time they start a game in the NFL, their career is already 1/3 over.

Alabama recruits a ton of talent. They are good and deep at nearly every position every year. Saban plays and coaches a pro style, so many of his players are ready for the NFL coming out.

The problem is, these players are on the field with dominant talent their entire careers. Think about that....if you are an Alabama linebacker, you have been playing behind that defensive line for years, and have been kept clean of blockers for the most part your entire career. I know they still have to occasionally take on blockers, but when you have players that good in front of you at every position it makes your job very easy and makes you look very good in highlight reels. If you're a DB, the ball is always coming out quickly because of the pressure. If you're a running back, you are always running through huge holes because of dominant offensive line play at nearly every position.

They do produce a lot of very good players, but many never live up to the hype. My point is, when there are that many good players on the field at the same time, it's hard to evaluate players sometimes. They are extremely well coached, so they are always in position to make plays. When they get to the NFL, things are a little different. They are not playing with an overwhelming talent advantage. Also, particularly with the defensive players, they are seeing sophisticated offenses with NFL route trees for the first time. They have a coaching and schematic advantage in college, but when they get to the pros, every team has the game coached at the highest level.

Saban is that good of a coach at the college level.

His players also seem to have shorter than usual careers with a ton of chronic injury conditions. Someone needs to look into the practice habits at Alabama. These are young men that shouldn't be showing signs that their bodies are used up before they get to the NFL. 20 hours of practice time per week shouldn't be doing that to these kids.

I'll get off my soapbox now. I just wanted to give my theory on why Alabama players don't always pan out.

On the injury front....you answered your own question. The level of competition is such that if you end up in the trainer room, there's another guy there taking your spot in the rotation. Players play hurt, even to the point of playing themselves out of a career. It's not how Bama conducts practices or weight training or conditioning. Players are afraid to take themselves out when hurt.

Mojouw

The Alabama talent level combined with the fact that Saban is a pretty hearless piece of crap of human being. I think all the posters have hit the nail on the head. 'Bama burns these kids up.

The stories of Saban's indifference and animosity towards Dolphins players when he was in the NFL are pretty extreme.
