Panthers rescind franchise tag on Josh Norman
By Around The NFL Staff NFL.com
Published: April 20, 2016
The Philadelphia Eagles' trade up to the No. 2 of the NFL Draft is suddenly not the most surprising news of the day. Josh Norman is now an unrestricted free agent.
The Carolina Panthers announced the stunning news Wednesday that the team has rescinded the franchise tag for cornerback Josh Norman, putting him on the open market.
"After a number of conversations with Josh's agent we realized that a long-term deal was not attainable," general manager Dave Gettleman said. "We have decided to rescind the franchise tag freeing Josh to immediately become a UFA. We thank Josh for all his contributions and truly wish him well."

if I where to guess ...
Jacksonville , they have 53 mill in cap space yet and Davon House is their best Corner and Prince Amukamara is on the other side ( who they already snagged in free agency )
Bears have the space and Tracy Porter cant play much longer can he ?
49ers have over 50 mill in space and I bet there isnt many people who can name a corner on their roster let alone a starter without looking it up

Well, he had a very easy way to head that problem off, which was signing the franchise offer. If there was a violin smaller than the world's smallest violin, that's what would be playing for him.

Hopefully not the team that would have drafted Apple; I want him gone. And if it's Ramsey, Hargreaves or Alexander, they'll get taken before us anyway. Still looks like if we get a CB in Round 1, we'll be getting a shaky deal at best.

Report: Steelers Have Already Inquired About Free Agent CB Josh Norman
BY DAVE BRYAN (http://www.steelersdepot.com/author/davebryan/) APRIL 20, 2016 AT 08:59 PM
Cornerback Josh Norman had his franchise tag designation rescinded by the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday and as a result he is now an unrestricted free agent.
While it would be shocking if the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Norman at any point forward, according to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, they are one of several teams that have called about him.
Norman, who recorded 56 total tackles last season in addition to 4 interceptions, is reportedly looking for a long-term contract that averages $16 million a season.
Had Norman signed his franchise tag tender he would have been guaranteed at least $13.95 million in 2016. The Panthers reportedly decided to rescind the tag after coming to the conclusion that the two sides would be unable to agree to a long-term deal.
The Steelers probably just decided to call to check on Norman’s status just as they did with cornerback Darrelle Revis a few years ago after the New England Patriots decided not to pick up his 2015 option.
Norman was drafted by the Panthers in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Coastal Carolina.

Just to play devil's advocate. Imagine you're the Steelers and you can figure out a way to make the money work. Now look at your team and then think about the draft. You've given nothing in the way of picks to strengthen your biggest weakness. Now you can use the draft to bolster your pass rush and/or get the best safety in the draft. Put Norman on one side and between Golson, Gay, and Cockrell your secondary is stronger than it's been since the day Rod Woodson blew out his knee. Your defense just became top 5 level, which combined with your offense makes you the team to beat going into the 16 season.
I don't expect this obviously. But every now and then the Steelers as a franchise will do something to surprise you. And certainly they can sense how good of position this will put them in for this coming season. I just got a crazy hunch the Steelers might be more than tire kickers here.

I can also see the Steelers getting something done here. The window is beginning to close and when Ben's gone it will slam shut. They need to go all in to win now. It's doubtful, but if they did somehow get something done I wouldn't be floored.

Norman is so very overrated it's funny. He has had ONE...ONE good season. He is not physically gifted, and was protected in the Carolina Zone-defense. But the bottom line is....the BOTTOM LINE, e.g., the MONEY! And the 49ers have over 54 million available. Not to mention that Norman's best Buddy and former college teammate " Jerome Simpsin " plays for the Niners. So I think in the end if he doesn't change his mind and re-signs in Carolina....he will be a 49er.
Cause Money talks!!

Norman was one of the best Corners in the league last year , but Panther fans where crying for his release a few years ago .... 2015 was an anomaly in his game at this point until he proves otherwise 16 million is a ton of money to gamble away that he can reproduce those kind of results .
Many say the Steelers have the best chance at winning so would be the best landing spot but I question that logic even as a Steeler fan , hell the Panthers was willing to pay 11-12 mill a year in an extension to the tag we could not offer him that much and he was already on a winning team ( with friends and bonds ) just removed from the super bowl appearance so the " chance to win is out the window " he had that and walked away from it over a few million a year so he is clearly chasing the $$$ , Dollars he won't find in Pittsburgh

I'm hoping another AFC North team gets him and we can torch him twice a season for the next 4-5 years. He can't cover AB, he can't cover Bryant in the redzone, let him chase Wheaton or DHB all over for 60 mins.

Well I am guessing the Steelers called his agent, his agent responded $16m/year and the Steelers hung up. I am going to laugh when he doesnt even get the franchise price he would have gotten if he had stayed with the Panthers. Also, I hope he goes to a team like Jacksonville where he will never sniff another SB. I understand chasing the money to a point, but $16m a year for 1 year of productivity is stupid.

The funniest thing about all this is that it is totally an ego thing, not even a good business decision. All the reports are that Norman and his reps are seeking the highest dollar amount per year figure that they can report but NOT the most guaranteed money. In other words it might average 16 mil per, but I bet Norman never sees over 40% of that money.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. When will these guys learn that 100 % of 8 million is more than 40% of 16 million?

lmfao. if $10 million a year is your ceiling for spending on a player, especially with the escalating cap inflation, your best draft picks are all essentially going to be rentals that go to other teams.

Wait a couple years and see. Even if he's on the roster, there may be no AB in Pittsburgh anyway, or at least not the AB we are familiar with now. He'll be pushing 30 at the end of this contract, and success comes and goes very quickly. If there's anyone I'd bet on to stay productive for longer, it's him, but there's never such a thing as a sure thing.

To be quite frank, im not worried about him getting overpaid 3 years from now if his production declines dramatically and he gets injured all the time. I expect Ben to be about finished with football and our superbowl window shut with him by then.

If AB were in his prime after this contract we would most certainly sign him for $16m+/year, but he will be on the down hill (still productive, but no longer the best) and he will get a good contract. I agree with PWard86, our window with Ben will probably be pretty much closed so we will be looking to get our next franchise QB and supporting cast. Hopefully we can pull a Broncos and get a top def to keep us competitive.

Where would Josh Norman play in our secondary? He's not a 'Revis Island' CB. He's more a slot guy. We have that, and in spades. What we could use is outside help against the bigger WRs. Josh Norman may be worth 16M somewhere, but not here.

2016 NFL Draft Rumors:
Friday, April 22
By Tony Pauline
Carolina Panthers
I'm told part of the reason the Carolina Panthers removed the franchise tag from Josh Norman, which allowed him to enter the free agent market, is due to the fact the team did not want to sign a 28-year-old cornerback to a big-money long-term contract, which included guarantees into his 30s. Norman will turn 29 years old this coming December.
