He hasn’t drawn the interest of his little brother, but Geoff Schwartz definitely has some interest.

According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, the veteran guard is visiting the Steelers today.

Schwartz was cut by the Giants after two injury plagued seasons, though he started 11 games at guard for them. A former seventh-round pick of the Panthers, Schwartz would lend some stability inside and has some experience playing right tackle as well.

The Steelers signed former Broncos tackle Ryan Harris to replace the departed Kelvin Beachum, but need some depth up front.

Geoff’s brother Mitchell signed a five-year, $33 million deal with the Chiefs earlier this offseason.

He'd be a great signing. They'd be a lot of depth across the o-line.

What are the Steelers thinking with free agent Geoff Schwartz?

By: Curt Popejoy

One of the more puzzling moves of the offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers has been the interest in free-agent offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz. The Steelers have already re-signed guard Ramon Foster, and brought in tackle Ryan Harris.

But to better understand why the Steelers might be considering signing Schwartz, let’s look at what the Steelers have at offensive line right now.

As of now, the tackle position seems fairly set. On the right side, Marcus Gilbert is one of the most underrated tackles in the league. He’s a big, mauling run blocker who has improved greatly in pass protection. On the left side, it looks like it’s going to be a competition between Harris and Alejandro Villanueva for which player will start at left tackle. The only other tackle on the roster of any significance is Mike Adams, who continues to rehab from back surgery.

At guard, the starters are locked in. Ramon Foster on the left and David DeCastro on the right form one of the best tandems in the league. Their primary backup is Chris Hubbard. He’s entering his third season with the Steelers out of UAB, but has no starts. At center, the Steelers are looking forward to the return of Pro Bowler Maurkice Pouncey, and Cody Wallace can return to his role as backup.

So where does Schwartz fit? A couple of different spots. Keep in mind that before missing the bulk of the last two seasons with injury, he was one of the best guards in the league. Pittsburgh has to be thinking that he could provide some legit depth along the interior offensive line. After all the injuries this team went through in 2015, they are taking nothing to chance if the Steelers lose one of their starting guards.

The Steelers could also be thinking about added insurance at right tackle in case Adams can’t get back to full health. Either way, adding Schwartz would be a great move for the Steelers, and another sign of what I’ve been saying all offseason. This team is loading up for a run at a Super Bowl. Pittsburgh has always been a patient franchise, letting things come to them, but with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger at his career peak, the franchise has to strike while the iron is hot.

They are facing some serious salary cap decisions in the next couple of seasons, so why not bring in an experienced veteran like Schwartz who can give the team confidence that offensive line depth is covered. When his visit was first announced it didn’t make a lot of sense, but upon further review, this is a smart move assuming he’s healthy.

According to who? Before missing the last two seasons with injury, he was with two different teams in those two years. Didn't start a single game with the Vikings and the season after he only started 7 games with the Chiefs. How exactly was he one of the best guards in the league?

From everything that I see, he had one good year with the Panthers.

Geoff Schwartz Signs With Detroit Lions

BY ALEX KOZORA MARCH 30, 2016

It should come as no surprise to see a free agent who met and left the Pittsburgh Steelers sign somewhere else. So it should induce zero shock to know that OL Geoff Schwartz has signed with the Detroit Lions to a one-year deal.

Schwartz visited the team on March 24th but as mentioned, did not sign a contract. It’s a common pattern. Most players who sign with Pittsburgh do so on the day they arrive, rarely circling back after further testing the market.

It was a mild surprise to see him brought in in the first place but helps illustrate the team’s commitment to adding quality offensive line depth.

Stefen Wisniewski was also brought in for a visit and has not signed with anyone else.

Currently, the Steelers’ backup interior positions consist of Cody Wallace, Chris Hubbard, and B.J. Finney.
