Journeyman OT.

Looks like the OT version of Ventrone. 3 different stints w/the Donkeys and a few other teams.

That could be good if AV and Harris compete for the LT position. The loser would be a very good backup.

Do you trust Mike Adams if the steelers have an injury to AV or Gilbert?

And if last year the AV season was a fluke, the Steelers would have been in trouble.

Depth. Won't want him as a starter.

Looks like Beachum is gone for sure.

I guess this means Okung isn't a likely signing either.

I agree. I'll take him as a backup, nothing else.

good, I would much rather see that money go to signing a CB or safety in free agency...

For less than $ 2million per season, I don't think it means anything. Likely, but not a done deal.

I think this means free agency for us is done.

I'd trust Big Mikey to be a waterboy. He's just too damn soft IMHO.

Harris' addition means the Steelers probably expect Kelvin Beachum to walk in free agency. Harris made 13 starts on Peyton Manning's blindside last season, but was far from effective.

Now 31, he'll join Alejandro Villanueva as an option on Pittsburgh's left side. Marcus Gilbert will probably remain at right tackle.

All that being said, Harris' money is not imposing enough to consider Beachum's departure a sure thing.

It's not a big splash signing. What am I supposed to say? I agree it's a good depth signing, but nothing more.

good signing as we lacked decent depth ... maybe Munch can make him into something beyond what he has been which was adequate depth

I guess that pretty well sets the O Line for next year Big V, Foster, Pouncey, DeCastro and Gilbert. With Wallace and Harris as backups and ?

Here's to a healthy season!!!!!

If he was signed to replace Mike Adams: okay.

If if he was signed to replace AV: :scared:

I'm pretty sure he was signed to replace Mike Adams and not AV. Harris has game experience at both tackle positions. Something neither AV or Beachum could claim. And it absolutely is a big thing. I think Ramon Foster was forced to switch sides at the guard position a few years back due to injury along the line. The drop off in his play was noticeable and he alluded to the fact that he lost a fraction of a second off the ball every play because he had to turn things in his brain backwards to account for the opposite side of the line. I know they told Harris that he could compete for the starting LT spot, but I think they expect AV to grow in that role and be an above average starter this year at a very affordable price.

I agree with Zu, he is there as a versatile backup. Hopefully we won't need to use him and AV improves alot this year. There are already reports of AV in the weight room so we know he is dedicated.

The guy jumped into enemy fire to rescue downed comrades!
So yeah we know this guy is dedicated to the cause. :salute:

I think AV's upside is greater than that of Beachum and that's why they've gone down the path they have.

Also,

AV, Harris and the Steelers have Munchak.

Beachum, now, does not.

Advantage, Pittsburgh.

In the end I think this was more about AV than anything. Yeah they told Harris he could compete for the job, but he knows he wasn't given starters money, so I'm sure nothing was guaranteed or even insinuated. AV is the incumbent and it's his job to lose is the way I read this. And I don't think the Steelers expect him to lose it. I think they see him as an ascending talent with a high ceiling. And that's why they let Beachum go. So what it comes down to is do you sign Beachum at 4 mil + a year and possibly stunt the development of a player you feel can be his better in due time? Or do you sign a guy who you know is able and willing to come off the bench and has game and starters experience at both tackle positions at half the money? And that's where we're at today.

DIRECT COMPETITION

When the Steeler signed Denver veteran free agent left tackle Ryan Harris last week, it wasn't to anoint him the starter. It was to provide “direct competition” for Alejandro Villanueva, who started 10 games last year for the injured Kelvin Beachum.

“He knows how to play. He started at left tackle. He has also started at guard and at right tackle. He will provide great competition for the left tackle spot,” Colbert said of Harris. “Whoever doesn't win the spot will provide great depth.”

Harris started all 19 games, including the Super Bowl, for the Broncos last year filling in for the injured Ryan Clady.
