Yeah so far this is like a fans dream come true. All offensive issues addressed so there is nothing left but to go defense. We will have a new DL, 2 new CB's and a new S. It is like freaking Christmas so far.

I agree, I think we'll draft both a big ugly NT/DT that can rotate in with Tuitt and Heyward and give them some occasional rest AND an edge pass rushing 4-3 type of DE that can pressure the opposing QB.

Green could fit the bill nicely. Primarily the blocking TE behind Gates, but has good route/catch ability.
And because he IS sitting behind Gates, and us having somewhat of a vacancy, it could be just what both sides are looking for.

I believe he was a mid-rounder when the Chargers drafted him.

holy shit. i cant believe this might be happening. im trying not to get my hopes up too hard, but a move tight end is something Ben has never had in his career and im just salivating at the possibilities.

defenses can just stay at home.

Well, that makes sense - go after the position in FA that is probably the worst by far in the draft class. So that takes one question mark off the board. Will be interesting to see how much we paid him, but it shouldn't be all that much. Hopefully enough left to bring in that one key missing piece ...

good signing , not the blocker of Miller ( but very adequate ) can play inline or move TE , this Offense on paper just got better

Ladarius Green tabbed to fill Heath Miller's shoes in Pittsburgh

ESPN.com news services

Former San Diego Chargers tight end Ladarius Green is expected to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The signing, which cannot be official until the start of the new league year at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, comes in the wake of longtime Steelers tight end Heath Miller's retirement in February.

The Steelers are high on Jesse James, last year's fifth-round pick, but a Green signing adds depth and playmaking. Plus the Steelers value tight ends who block, and they feel Green is an adequate blocker.

Green played well while Antonio Gates sat out the first part of the 2015 season for a suspension, totaling 14 receptions for 174 yards and two touchdowns through the first four games.

The 2012 fourth-round pick did not have much of an impact in the second half of the year, as nagging injuries slowed his production. In his final eight games, Green totaled 11 catches for 125 yards and zero touchdowns. He finished the season on injured reserve with an ankle issue.

Gates re-signed with the Chargers on Wednesday, agreeing to a two-year contract.

For the 2015 season, Green played 627 offensive snaps, totaling 37 catches for 429 yards and four touchdowns. Green averages 14.1 yards per reception for his career and turns 26 years old in May.

I left Jobu a bucket of KFC, with a note detailing that I wanted "Eric Weddle from the Chargers".

I just hope that his hands didn't get the name all greasy, and thus, he sent us the wrong Charger.

Joking aside, I love this pickup. Not as much as Weddle, but this is going to be a steal. Green is a pass-catching TE. Yes, he was kept in to block, but he's going to be Ben's new best friend.

Gates is a HOFer, but really, Green is currently the better TE. Gates came in, got a few touchdowns (as he always does) and Green was an afterthought. Now... Green will be the #1, and he will thrive. Just look at the first few games (when Gates was out). In those four games, Green had about 20 receptions, for 200 yards, and 2 TDs. That is on pace for 80 receptions, for 800 yards, and 8 TDs... which is outstanding.

Green's blocking won't make anyone forget Miller - but he will be the most athletically gifted TE on the Steelers since Eric Green.

Of course for all his athletic gifts, that Green kinda under delivered. So....

Don't those #'s and that structure basically mean it is a series of 1 year deals? In other words other than the prorated bonus money, there is no cap penalty/dead money for cutting Green? If so that is a great move. Protects the team for a player not panning out and also allows the player to earn a bunch of cash if he is any good as a starter.

Steelers sign TE Ladarius Green (5 years, $20 million): A- Grade

The Steelers usually don't make much of a splash in free agency, but when they sign someone, it's usually a quality move. That's definitely the case here, as the front office found a new play-maker for Ben Roethlisberger.

Green is very talented, but never got much of a chance in San Diego because he was playing behind Antonio Gates. He'll be a starter now, as the Steelers needed someone to replace the retired Heath Miller. Even better, this is a great bargain, especially when considering that other tight ends were paid more, despite the fact that Green was the top player at his position in free agency. It's laughable that Green is set to earn $20 million over four years, while Coby Fleener is getting $36 million over five seasons. This is a great transaction by Pittsburgh.

guard, and even that might be a reach

Interior o line depth. I shudder to think about Cody Wallace AND someone else having to play big minutes at the same time.

Tackle depth. As it stands it is Mike Adams and some later round and udfa dart throws. I think last season showed us all how important having a quality reserve OT could be.

Back-up QB is a must upgrade. An argument could be made for back-up RB. And finally, gotta keep the pump primed at WR. As early as next off-season there could be only 4 guys on the roster who have caught and NFL pass. Recent pattern has been to get a WR on the team 1-2 years before you need them to do much of anything.

Not saying that all of these needs need to come from the draft. Their is still a ton of player acquisition paths left before the start of camp. Some of the above listed "needs" may already be with the team via futures contracts and the PS. But while frontline starters on offense are pretty set - there is still work to be done on that side of the ball.

Will they even use him? How many times did they neglect to use Miller in the passing game because they needed him to block? Green cannot block well. He simply isn't physical enough.

They didn't use Heath Miller? How's that go? Over 500 career catches, 60+ last year. What's the number that would satisfy you? :noidea:

He'll be a piece of the offense. He can block ok, and they'll use him to do so when they want, and he can be a target in the passing game when needed. I guess a lot of how he produces will be dependent on Jesse James. But if I were to guess now I'd think between the two of them they'll catch over 60 passes.

I can't see how this signing is a negative and why you think it is?

Did I say it was a negative signing? I would say it is a positive because it means they don't need to look for a TE in the draft now.

How often have the Steelers neglected Miller in games because they needed him to block? Hopefully Green will work on his blocking.

Hopefully, not that the Steelers field an actual NFL quality o0line and not Max Starks, Pouncey, and some traffic cones - the day so the TE needing to function as another offensive lineman is over for this team.
