WOW. I mean at his age it shouldnt be the most shocking thing but its so hard to imagine this team without him. Best wishes Heath. Were going to miss screaming your name. We'll just let the legacy live on by yelling it at Jesse James instead .

I hate to be the rude guy that seems to move on fast but I say we sign Dwayne Allen from the Colts. He'll be cheap because he's so underutilized, but he's a really well rounded TE and this is a weak TE draft class. We have too many needs to be eager drafting Hunter Henry. Him and The Outlaw can be potent

No. It's time to think about the future, not panic.

Not everyone HAS to be a first-round draft pick. I'd rather see how James does than make a desperation pick because Henry is the only hyped TE in the draft. However, if a guy like Austin Hooper (Stanford) is available in R2, I'd be a lot more willing to pull the trigger rather than just wait for Round 3 and below.

Its not panic, and it is the future. Henry can do everything Miller did and more. There is no TE in this class as well rounded as Henry. But, my opinion isn't going to change what the Steelers do. :chuckle:

I still don't think it's the smart move. We can win a championship with the TEs we have. We can't win one with the defensive secondary as currently constituted.

So reaching for the second-round CB and filling out the shortlist is absolutely the better move. The Apocalypse is coming in 3-4 years when Ben retires and we also have to eat our salary cap shit sandwich at the same time. So basically anyone who's good from this draft class is not going to be our "TE/LT/OLB (insert any position) of the next 10 years," he'll be ours until his rookie contract is over and someone else's after that. Take the guy who helps us win in the immediate short term, which is a third DL or DB.

I'd like to see James get a shot and see what he can do. There's no guarantee we don't already have our TE of the future on the roster right in front of us. He's the most promising TE prospect we've had in a long time; no reason to shove him to the back just based on his draft status, or shove another guy in front of him based on his. And while Henry certainly seems like a decent player in his own right, I am dead certain that he will be overpriced because he is the ONLY well-known option there. I'm willing to bet he's not even there when we pick anyway.

Miller: Thank you Steelers Nation

Statement from TE Heath Miller on his decision to retire.

Today, I informed the Steelers of my plans to retire. I realize how extremely fortunate and grateful I am to have spent my entire career as a Pittsburgh Steeler. I would like to thank the Rooney Family, Kevin Colbert, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin, James Daniel and the rest of the Steelers organization for giving me the opportunity to live out my childhood dream. I will always cherish and value the special bonds that I formed with my teammates. It was truly an honor for me to take the field with them. I am also appreciative of my entire family and all of the coaches who helped me along the way. Additionally, I want to thank Steelers Nation, the best fans in the NFL!

Lastly, I owe the biggest thank you to my wife, Katie, and our four children for their unwavering support.

Heath is/was a great player. I think this loss can't be underestimated with what heath brought to the table with his blocking and pass catching.

Looking at this from a financial standpoint, how much do we gain in cap space? It has to be a fair amount.

Big loss for the team, especially in the locker room. Team first approach with no calling attention to himself even after a score. He could have done one more year, but as mentioned above it is better to go out a year early than late in most cases. I say they should drag him back for one more SB run.

Ben: 'I learned every day from Heath'

What was he going to miss most about tight end Heath Miller, who had just announced his retirement?

“Everything,” stated Roethlisberger.

And you knew he meant it.

Roethlisberger and Miller have been teammates for 11 seasons, Roethlisberger the Steelers No. 1 pick in 2004, Miller in 2005. But more than that, they have been friends, confidants, leaders, and family.

It made it tough for Roethlisberger to even put into words what Miller has meant to him.

“To put together a statement is hard because where do you start with Heath Miller?” said Roethlisberger. “For someone like me that has been blessed to play with someone like him, not just from a physical standpoint of how great of a football player he was, but the type of person he was, the type of teammate he was. Probably hands down the best teammate I have been a part of.

“It’s hard to talk about Heath, and I said this talking to him, it’s hard to do it without getting emotional. That’s how much he has meant to me as a football player, teammate and friend. I have been so lucky and blessed to have Heath around my whole career, 11 years. To have someone like him on my side has truly been a blessing.”

i dont see any under the radar, great value options other than Dwayne Allen. I remember reading that the colts thought he was the 2nd best player on the team behind Andrew Luck during training before the start of his 2nd season. And then he got hurt. He's just been underutilized severely and had a couple fluke injuries. Good blocker, good receiver.

Also, is it too soon to do stat projections for The Outlaw?

Jesse James 2016 stats:

52 receptions
587 yards
11.3 YPC
6 TD's

It is sad seeing Heath go. That being said, I hope this move doesn't cause them to overvalue TE in the draft. With the skill position players they have, it reduces the need for a TE and can allow us to see what we have in Jesse James. Defense remains a more pressing need

Hi, Chicky! :)

Don't get me wrong... I was somewhat prepared for his retirement, but I was shocked and very upset when I received the alert because I didn't think it would be until next year. It took me awhile to process the news, but once I did, I was very happy he retired healthy and on his own terms and not due to a career ending injury or because he was forced out.

I, too, am happy he retired a Pittsburgh Steeler. I will really, really miss seeing him on the field, but I wish him the very best in his future endeavors, whatever they may be. He deserves nothing less from Steelers Nation.

This makes me so sad but I feel Heath did the right thing for himself and his family getting out now. He had a pretty nasty concussion at least that one time and after the last 3 Bengals games, I think it made him pause. I can't help but think that he and his wife had some conversations about what players like that are getting away with. They have more money than they can ever spend (because the Millers aren't stupid people) and why take any more chances with his future health? Every starter on the Steelers are a target now, especially in those particular games. He no doubt even experienced assassination attempts himself in those games.

I wish Heath and his family nothing but happiness and good health. And thank you for all you did...and the way you did it.

They should make Miller the new STs Coach.

I still don't think it's the smart move. We can win a championship with the TEs we have. We can't win one with the defensive secondary as currently constituted.

So reaching for the second-round CB and filling out the shortlist is absolutely the better move.

Totally agree on that. Our offense is so filled with talent, if they stay healthy there is none better in the league, even without Heath at TE. We have a couple of good receivers, two great RBs who are good receivers, plus Toussaint who's not bad either. And we have two FBs.

Better we spare that draft pick and the roster spot to improve our poor secondary.

Shocking, thought he had at least a year or two left.

it became very obvious last season that Heath had clearly lost a step.

I commend him for possibly going out a year too early rather than a year too late...

I'm saddened for selfish reasons, but happy for Heath and his family. He took a lot of hard hits catching the ball over the middle and wasn't afraid to take the big hit, more times than not, held onto the ball. With the day and age of the life long effects of concussions, we will see more and more of this as the years go on, players retiring at or near the end of their prime.

I agree with ALLD, Heath has a wealth of knowledge to share with the youngsters on the team.

Stunning news. He'll be missed. A great leader and player whose void will be felt. It wouldn't surprise me to see Ben go too after this in maybe couple of years from now.

I'm good with giving The Outlaw a chance.

Still a little bummed that Heath isn't returning. Would've liked to know I was watching him play for the last time. I think we all knew it was coming, but we didn't know it would be this season. I think a lot were hoping it was next year. Wonder if he did it on his own or if he was told he'd be cut this off-season.

I agree in that I would have liked to know we were watching Heath play for the last time, as well. It would have been nice to have the fans honor him during his last season. But, in typical Heath fashion, he knows there is no "I" in TEAM, so I respect his decision to retire quietly.

:hug:To Kate you were the 1st person I thought of when I saw the news. Now I see his wife's name is Katie, hmmm are you not telling us your whole story??? LOL

I am glad that Heath went out on his own terms. A Class act, a great man and will always be a Steeler Great. Like everyone who knew it was going to be coming soon just didn't expect it this soon. Thank you Heath for all you have done for us fans and you will be missed.

Thank you so much for thinking of me, Butch. Love you bunches! :hug:I have absolutely nothing to add regarding my relationship with Heath. No, seriously, I would never be able to be married to a pro football player. I'd be a basket case regarding the possibility of concussions and injuries. Nope, not for me.

As some of my good friends from the now defunct Steelers Fever message board may know, there are only two "Steelers" who I hold in very high esteem. Those are Coach Dick LeBeau (now with the Titans, of course) and Heath Miller. Just two. That's it. I really like and enjoy watching the other Steeler greats, but Coach LeBeau and Heath Miller have a high moral character which I greatly respect and admire. They don't grow many like them anymore.

Upon processing everything in regards to Heath's retirement and the reported conversations Ben and Heath shared, the same thought crossed my mind. I don't think we're that far away from hearing Ben announcing his own retirement. Quite frankly, I wouldn't blame Ben at all. He's a warrior, and I wouldn't trade him for the world, but dang, he sure takes a lickin'!

Which is why I think the Steelers should go all in for the next year or 2 to get that 7th Lombardi.

That was real nice to watch Heath and, man I'm going to miss him like I know every other steelers fan. That guy was one of the greats that did everything and, more I get teared just talking about him around some of my friends. Just seemed like a great person and, great teammate what more can be said it does suck but, I wish him well. Hopefully the Outlaw James can play play at a high level. It won't be the same watching the steelers and, not seeing Heath out there playing.
