As Colbert said to Wexell and the gathered reporters,
“maybe a kid that we wouldn’t look at in the past as a 4-3 end, now we can because he’ll be a sub-package rusher, which is on the field three-quarters of the time"

I like it! we get a NT that can rush the passer and also spell Heyward & Tuitt in Butler and the nation's sack leader and a pass rushing specialist in Nassib.

then gotta go CB/S/OG in rounds 3 & 4, depending on which of these positions we addressed in free agency...

Sign Weddle.

R1: Vernon Butler, DT/DE
R2: Carl Nassib, nickel DE/OLB specialist
**R3: Artie Burns, CB
R4: Denver Kirkland/Sebastian Tretola, LG
R7: Daryl Worley, CB/obligatory WVU player

**NOTE: It would not surprise me, at all, if the Steelers took Braxton Miller in R3.

My dream scenario for the moment:

Sign S/CB Walter Thurmond (He graded out super high as a safety AND cornerback for a bargain price. Tell me he isnt a steeler. 2 birds 1 stone.)
Sign CB Casey Heyward (will fly below the radar because of some injuries, but he was outstanding before)

R1: OLB Shaq Lawson
R2: Some good DE/NT idk...
R3: CB Xavien Howard/Artie Burns/Willie Jackson
R4: TE Nick Vannett

That makes a LOT of sense.

Free agents: under the radar guys

Lawson: the Steelers need an upgrade at OLB
DT/DE: discussed ad nauseum
Howard/Burns/Jackson: obvious
Vannett: better value than using a R1

QUESTION:
What happens with the LG spot? If Foster isn't re-signed, that R3 (or R4) pick might need to be used to fill that void.

shit i forgot about that. my default assumption all offseason has been letting Beachum walk and re-signing Foster. My new dream scenario:

Sign CB Casey Heyward (will fly below the radar because of some injuries, but he was outstanding before)
Re-sign G Ramon Foster
Sign Dwayne Dwayne Allen (Jesse James and Dwayne Allen could become a REALLY potent pair for years to come)

R1: OLB Shaq Lawson
R2: Some good DE/NT idk...
R3: CB Xavien Howard/Artie Burns/Willie Jackson
R4: Some good G idk (lol sorry haven't been paging through prospects enough)

Any thoughts on how Chris Long might fit into our defense? He had an injury plagued season last year that limited him, but he's only 30, and if he aces a physical maybe he's a guy that could bolster our depth on the line or even possibly make the transition to 3-4 OLB?

He's an UFA already released by the Rams so he could be brought in and looked at before the 16 season officially begins in March.

I think it would be fitting if the Raiders signed the son of Howie...

Carl Nassib – Worth a 2nd round pick?

Feb 20, 2016

Look at this resume for a moment:

A Defensive End who is 6’7’’, 272 pounds and lead the nation in sacks, forced fumbles and was second in the nation in tackles for loss and he did so in just 10 games. A former walk on player that earned a scholarship prior to his sophomore season, was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten athlete, an All-American and All-Big Ten player who won the Ted Hendricks Award (given to the nation’s best defensive end), Lombardi Award (given to the nation’s best defensive front seven player) and was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

So, top 5 in the draft right?

Nope. Not a chance.

Ok. Ok. But definitely a 1st rounder, right?

Nope. Not gonna happen.

What? Come on, you’re killing me! Ok. But he’s a lock for the 2nd round.

Well.....It's possible, but still not very likely.

You know what? F you man. I’m out.

That’s how my brain views the consensus "expert" draft projection for Carl Nassib (and if the last name seems familiar his brother Ryan is the backup QB for the Giants).

Currently he’s not even in the draft conversation until the late 2nd, early 3rd round, however I certainly hope the Steelers take a long hard look at him should he still be there in the late 3rd. Is he a work in progress? Yes. But a work in progress who had 15 sacks last year is something I'd like to have on my team. Plus the guy has a proven work ethic and drive which makes him Steeler's material in my eyes.

If they re-sign Foster, they wouldn't necessarily need to draft a LG this year.

But, if they do, the two guys from Arkansas are mid-round gems.

It reminds of the year that Elvis Dumervil dropped to the 5th round.

As a person, I love Chris Long. He's the ultimate professional and teammate. He does everything the right way.

As a player, I don't think that he fits a 3-4 defense. He's too light for a 3-4 DE and too slow to play OLB. His best position is 4-3 DE.

I'd love to see him come in as a pass rusher ala Kevin Greene but I just don't see it happening. There are plenty of 4-3 teams that will be willing to throw money at him.

Interestingly enough, Colbert and company's comments about not looking for a "position/body type" but a "role" in defensive players perhaps opens the door a crack for a guy like long to come and play "something". Maybe go old school and have him play a Bruce Smith kind of role - they are almost exactly the same size.

But even with a mounting history of injuries and being 30+, someone will throw money at him. He is a guy with a legitimate record of rushing the passer in the NFL. They don't come cheap in any scenario.

Bingo!!!

Colbert has stated that they want to add a "situational pass rusher". Long playing less would keep him fresher/healthier.

But, alas, there a plenty of teams who will pay him more that the Steelers can/would.

I heard Long on ESPN radio yesterday. It came across that he plans to prioritize winning over money. So I would we'rein with a chance if we reach out to him. Not sure what other teams he would deem as contenders that would make a play for him?

As far as Oakland goes, I know they got a good young qb and receiver. But that team hasn't been a serious contender since they played the Bucs in the Super Bowl at the turn of the millennium. I'm not sure if I'm in Long's position I make that kind of gamble with my last few years?

I just hope the Steelers make an effort to bring him in and at least talk to him.

He's a career DE, why would he make the switch now? He's not a tweener like Dumervil and Suggs were. Doesnt seem to make any sense. Even when we draft DE's to become OLB's, at least they haven't been playing the same position half their life.

Raiders were one of the more dangerous teams for a while slightly past the half way point of the season. Defense is what let them down. Seems to me they have a strong nucleus of players, not sure what you're seeing: Derek Carr, Michael Crabtree, Amari Cooper, Latavius Murray, Khalil Mack, Malcolm Smith, etc.

No way do you stand him up. Too late to teach an old dog new tricks. But simply put him on the field in pass rush situations at DE. Bruce Smith played at his size as a 3-4 end. Freeney rushed the passers as a smaller end. Etc.
