Shaun Suisham has "zero interest" in giving his job to Chris Boswell

By: Daniel Sager | February 11, 2016

Among rehabbing his injured ACL and acquiring his United States Citizenship, Steelers K Shaun Suisham’s focus heading into the 2016 season is singular; get his kicking gig back.

Suisham, who was among the league’s most reliable kickers from 2011 to 2014, missed the entire 2015 season after suffering a torn ACL in the Hall of Fame game against the Minnesota Vikings last preseason. After having to endure Josh Scobee’s inadequacy for four weeks of the regular season, it seemed as if the Steelers couldn’t get Suisham back soon enough. However, the train of thought quickly faded after first-year K Chris Boswell signed with the Steelers and went on to have one of the best kicking seasons in team history.

Naturally, this complicates things a little bit. Then again, if Suisham is to be believed, maybe it’s not that complicated after all.

The veteran kicker told Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he has “zero interest in giving his job away” to Boswell or anyone else. It’s safe to assume that Boswell feels the same.

Why would he? Just let them compete for the job.

It's a good problem to have. I say let them duke it out in training camp. Maybe we can snag a late round draft pick in a late preseason trade or something.

We have to get something out of one of these guys. We have two starting kickers.

That is a commodity and someone will want one of these guys.

Whichever one doesn't get hurt in preseason will get the job.

QFT plus I think is is level headed in those must make situations and I didn't hold my breath on FG's after Boz was kicking like I did with sushi

I almost hope kicker is one of the very last cuts before the regular season. Just in case. I can't stand the idea of one of our kickers getting picked up by another team and then we see ours injured.

Not fair to the kickers, I know. But still. . .

Former Steelers kicker Josh Scobee officially a member of the New Orleans Saints

By Jeff.Hartman on Mar 5, 2016

Josh Scobee was bad in 2015, but apparently not bad enough to be unemployed in 2016. The veteran kicker signed a one-year deal with the Saints Friday.

Before you check your watch, phone or calendar on your electronic device -- it is not April 1st. In other words, this is not an April Fool's joke.

Josh Scobee is now a member of the New Orleans Saints.

The former kicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who was released from his duties after an absolutely dreadful beginning of the season, has found a new home in the Big Easy.

Scobee claimed to be injured after he was released from his duties with the Steelers, but nothing official was ever announced by both Scobee or the Steelers. According to Rapoport's tweet, the injury was to his hip flexor, and he is now completely healed.

Maybe Scobee was injured when in Pittsburgh, but it doesn't lesson the sting of what transpired when he was in the black and gold. The missed field goals against the New England Patriots, and especially the Baltimore Ravens game at Heinz Field which were absolutely gut-wrenching to watch.

Scobee is now someone else's concerns, but for those who doubt there will be a market for a kicker like Shaun Suisham if he proves he is healthy...someone just signed Josh Scobee. Case closed.

Watch him go and have a career year now. Seems like that would be our luck.

It's Boz's job to lose, the way I look at it.

Boswell proved he could kick in Heinz Field. And so had Suisham.

Boswell can make a 50+ Yard FG. When's the last time Suisham has even been allowed to attempt one to win a game we were losing? His range ends at around 40 yards or so.

I think we trade Suisham for a sixth or seventh rounder towards the end of camp (or before if the Saints regret signing what's his face).

^^^ This. Boswell is younger, cheaper, has a stronger leg and seems just as accurate. He was a real find, considering he was our fourth kicker signed. I liked Suisham just fine, but as I've said before, I think he tackled himself right out of a job last preseason. I appreciate the enthusiasm, but I hope Bos (assuming we keep him) has better sense!

If we do one more significant FA signing, you can consider Suisham as good as gone. That couple million on June 1 will probably be needed to sign the rookies.

Maybe they can settle this with pistols at 10 paces.

As much as we all love Sushi, it's Boz time now. Fortunately after last year's league-wide kicking debacle, kickers are valued at an all-time high so we might be able to snag a late pick for him.

I think we all knew it would happen eventually. That being said, I feel bad for him if he did have a setback in his rehab. I would think other teams would stay away if that really did happen.

I just saw that Suisham told the PPG his latest knee injury is catastrophic and could threaten his career.

That sucks.

I'm sure somebody would have picked him up at least in midseason sometime if they needed one.

Suisham was a very good kicker and a very good teammate for this team. It sucks that he got injured and that the injury ultimately cost him his job.

I hope he is able to recover and continue his NFL career for another team. I wish him nothing but the best and thank him for his time in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham retires from the NFL, releases statement to fans

Former Steelers K Shaun Suisham issued a statement to Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review regarding his release.“Unfortunately, the injury I sustained in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game last preseason was catastrophic and has proven to be critical to continuing my career. My journey in the NFL has come to a crossroads.“I was raised in Wallaceburg, Ontario, as a hockey player and have been on an improbable 16-year journey as a kicker, competing at the highest level. The absolute nature of my position has given me the opportunity to test my resolve, and I have grown both professionally and as a man.“Undoubtedly, I will miss the challenge of game day and the preparation that is required. Change is hard, but I’m comfortable with where I am in life as a husband and father.“I will always be grateful to every team and coach that has given me an opportunity to compete in the NFL. I am especially grateful to everyone — teammates, coaches and fans — in our adopted hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa.”

Thank you Sushi for 4.5 years of stability at the kicking position. I remember all too well when he came in after Skippy took a nosedive and provided stability starting with a great 4-4 showing against Buffalo in his 2nd game that helped prevent a loss that otherwise would have cost them the division. Thank you Suisham

Not the preferred way to retire, but, very often the way a lot of players end up leaving the game.

Thanks for your time in the Steelers uniform, enjoy your retirement. Don't forget where Ontario is.

I'll be honest...when he was signed, I HATED the signing. His first couple season with Pittsburgh, I hated the guy. He became money though and I genuinely like the guy. $UI$HAM! Wish him the best. Hopefully he sticks around the team.
