The Pittsburgh Steelers brass is in Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl this weekend, and they have had their first official prospect visit of the offseason -- with a quarterback.

Many people take a look at prospects who are being interviewed by their favorite NFL team as a glimpse into the NFL Draft room and who they might see as potential draftees in the upcoming selection process. For fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers, their minds typically revolve around cornerbacks, safeties, defensive linemen and maybe an occasional offensive lineman.

Well, the Steelers are in Mobile, Alabama for the annual Senior Bowl and the team has concluded their first official prospect visit with -- a quarterback.

Talk about throwing fans through a loop, but the team officially met with USC QB Cody Kessler, per WalterFootball.com. Kessler is coming off a Senior season where the 6-foot 1-inch quarterback threw for 3,536 yards, with 29 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He finished the season with a 151.7 quarterback rating and a completion percentage of 66.8.

So, you might be wondering why the Steelers would be talking to a quarterback? That answer is easy. Landry Jones still has one year left on his current contract, but every other quarterback in the system is now a free agent, Bruce Gradkoswki and Mike Vick. The team clearly liked what they saw from Jones in 2015 in relief, and might be looking to draft a young quarterback to possibly be the No. 3 quarterback, and take over the No. 2 duties when Jones' current contract expires.

The Steelers likely won't be looking at a potential quarterback until the latter portions of the draft, and rightfully so with Ben Roethlisberger still having plenty left in the tank for the coming years; however, depth at the position has become an issue, and one which the team is looking into addressing in the draft.

This Saturday when you sit down to watch the Senior Bowl, keep an eye on Kessler -- we know the Steelers will be.

I hope they stay away from Kessler. Short and very average arm at best.

Amazingly, Mark Sanchez is the most accomplished NFL quarterback ever to come out of USC. I would avoid.

What do you mean by accomplished?

I'm not looking too much into it, personally.

The guy who "won" the most of anything, even if that only means a couple of playoff games. The history of USC quarterbacks who went pro is basically as follows:

I guess if you look at it like that. I'd go with Palmer though if I had to have one as a QB.

Yeah, Palmer probably had the most real talent of the bunch and the most regular-season success - but he's no peach either.

Palmer's a scared rabbit. Especially in big moments.

I believe the Steelers may be considering using one of their 7th round selections to draft a developmental QB, and all QBs still available then are going to have some types of shortcomings...

the fact that the Steelers are bringing in another QB for a visit is yet another obvious example of Art II and Haley continuing to disrespect Ben...:stirthepot:

We can certainly use an upgrade at backup QB.

You troll.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Steelers sign a veteran back up and draft a younger guy to compete with Jones for that 3 spot. Although I wouldn't be terribly annoyed if Jones was 3. I would be kinda annoyed if they went with him as the two without a veteran to compete with and then drafted a young guy.

ad hominem attack...:chuckle: :rofl2:

I agree with you, Landry Jones coming in as the #2 QB is like a box of chocolates...

I would rather have a developmental QB be at least 6', 3" with an above average arm.
