--- Not only will Dennis Dixon not have a short leash, he could remain the starter throughout these first four games if he performs well, even if Byron Leftwich returns to health.
“It depends on how he plays. And that’s the nature of the NFL,’’ Tomlin said today. “I think anybody who suggests anything different is misinformed or misleading you. Injuries are a part of the game. They are unfortunate, but they also provide opportunities for others. What those others do with the opportunities often times determine what happens going forward. I acknowledge that.”
--- There is no plan to use Charlie Batch as a “change of pace.’’
“That’s not our plan at this juncture,’’ Tomlin said. “We are going to play Dennis.”
--- Isaac Redman will be the short-yardage back, Tomlin announced. So adjust your Fantasy rosters in accordance. Rashard Mendenhall will keep his job as third-down back, which he held the second half of last season. However, Tomlin said he will keep track of Mendenhall’s carries because he does not want to overwork him. Apparently, Tomlin learned from his rookie season when he ran Willie Parker until the wheels fell off. He said both Mewelde Moore and Redman could step in.................
