It took most of the season, but cornerback Brandon Boykin has finally been seeing the field for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the last three games, playing in the slot as the third cornerback. Not that they bring him in right away during games, even though by the third or fourth drive he ends up being a mainstay.
And wouldn’t you know it, he has been playing well, too. He was able to make a handful of plays in his time on the field against the Broncos—even some against the run, which is supposedly the reason that the coaching staff has hesitated to play him.
Boykin entered the game late in the first quarter after a 61-yard touchdown on the previous drive. The Broncos managed to score on that drive, too, which they did on four consecutive drives, but late in the drive, you have to appreciate the cornerback’s recognition and speed to force Brock Osweiler to the edge and pressuring him to throw a poor pass.

Late in the half, on a second and eight play as the offense was driving, Boykin dropped into a zone coverage with two receiving options. When Emmanuel Sanders received the pass, he did well to break quickly and make a solid tackle, holding him short of the first down. Of course, the 14-yard run on third and one made his effort moot.

Early in the third quarter, he showed toughness against the run, battling well on the edge with Sanders trying to block him as the run stretched out to the perimeter. Boykin positioned himself to angle the back out of bounds for no gain, though a holding call negated the run altogether.

On the first play of the Broncos’ next drive, he nearly got his second interception in the last three games. Lined up in the slot over Sanders, he passed the receiver on after seeing Osweiler toss the screen. Boykin broke on the ball, but there was a battle for possession in the air that nobody won, so it merely went down as a pass defensed, but it shows a lot more than that.

Toward the end of the quarter, while the broadcast was too busy analyzing the punt return for a touchdown that never should have taken place to begin with after the football was clearly downed by a Steelers player prior to the return, Boykin made another tackle against the run.
On first down, he immediately saw that it was a running play and beat the wide receiver inside. As the outside linebacker got blocked out of making the tackle, Boykin was able to come in to wrap him up for a two-yard loss.

The idea that Boykin is too small to play the run in this defense is nonsense when you see the other cornerbacks on this team. Boykin is a small corner, but he knows how to tackle players that are bigger and taller than he is, which he has shown since the preseason. He should be playing in the slot from the first snap of the game.

He has not been playing because he is to small? This makes our second round pick last year even more confusing.

It's so refreshing to see smart football being played by a member of our secondary.

41 should not be on the field. I don't know how the coaches can watch this tape and think "Awww, poor guy, he had a rough game, we should give him another chance to rebound. After all, it is Christmas..."

Half the time Blake is on the ground when the play finishes, all disheveled and shit, and he gets lucky at times with poorly thrown balls, but that shit doesn't fly against good teams.

He's consistently out of position, cannot cover, and cannot tackle.....

......wtf?!

Boykin will be allowed to walk at the end of the season while Blake receives a large salary increase/contract.

If I'm Boykin I would want a guarantee that Blake would be cut and that I would play before I re-signed in Pittsburgh. This would guarantee me playing time and guarantee that my fan approval rating go up. Sure it may not be popular with Blake...but fuck him...he'd be cut...

Boykin will never sign with the Steelers because of the way that he's been treated. The coaching staff completely blew this one.

Boykin did state he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh next year, of course it's very possible he was just saying that because he wanted to see the field, and this was back when he was on the bench. Ultimately, if you are an NFL player whose goal is to win a championship and contribute to a championship team in a positive way, Pittsburgh is a damn fine place to be.

They did the same exact thing with Lance Moore. I don't understand their mentality sometimes.

Coach and GM not being on the same page most likely.

that's a reasonable theory but it's really hard to speculate because we simply aren't privy to what happens behind the scenes...

It's pretty easy to figure out what happened behind the scenes on this one. Colbert got a phone call from the Eagles' GM and said "Holy shit! I have a chance to add a good cornerback, but I have to act quickly. I'd better call Tomlin and see what he thinks!"

Then he called Tomlin, who wasn't in his office because he was in the film room, drinking a 40 and jerking off to footage of Blake falling on his face while a receiver ran past him.

"Shit, why do they only sell this in 40 ounce bottles?" he said. "Blake's so good, they should be selling malt liquor in 41's! I'm going to call the 40 people and give them a piece of my mind." So when Colbert called Tomlin on his cell, Tomlin was on hold waiting for the president of the Olde English "800" company.

So Colbert said "fuck it" and made the trade assuming it'd be OK. But Colbert is more of a King Cobra guy, so when he asked Tomlin why he didn't answer his cell, they got into it and Tomlin was like "Fuck you, 8-ball rules. So fuck your pussy ass King Cobra, and fuck Boykin."

True story. I heard it from the guy who manages Cam Thomas and Jacoby Jones' stash of animal porn.

I can visualize the above scenario however, it is most likely a clash of personalities. What doesn't make sense is Tomlin played Vick, but he hesitated with Boykin. It might be a feeling, but it certainly isn't "The Force".
