View Full Version : Roethlisberger already Hall of Famer in Namath's eyes

Joe Namath never threw for more than 300 yards in four straight games or been part of a team that scored 30 or more points in five in a row, but greatness can appreciate greatness.

Namath, Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 1985, says he looks forward to one day greeting another quarterback into Canton: Ben Roethlisberger.

Even if the Steelers' QB never wins another game or throws another pass.

With three Super Bowl appearances and two Lombardi trophies, Roethlisberger has already done enough to merit induction five years after his retirement, which, Namath laughs, doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.

"He will be a Hall of Famer," Namath told The Times. "He's already accomplished enough in my mind's eye and my understanding of the sport and understanding of the position and the people that have played. He is already. He will be. Ben deserves that accolade."

Ol' Joe was from that generation where anything goes as long as it feels good. Keep going until you burn out or take somebody else down with you. I think, my friends, that the pendulum is swinging back the other way to common sense American values. That does not mean I don't want to have any fun, but use your best judgement and act like a role model for future generations.

I agree, Big Ben belongs in the Hall of Fame.

Well considering that Broadway Joe's eyes are probably glassy and booze addled, I'm not sure if this means anything.

Also, who cares?

He is a Hall of Famer. The records he broke as a rookie. His legacy. The records he has now. He's a Hall of Famer.

To quote Broadway Joe, "He's not a thrower, he's a passer." :alcoholic: :chuckle:

I believe Joe's been sober for at least 5 years.

And I care. Joe's not only a legend of the game, and a Hall of Famer, he's also a Western Pennsylvania native. So what he has to say has interest to me.

Fair enough. I hate to say it because Namath is a true legend, but I've never seen him string together a series of insights about football. Mostly just says some string of cliches. But he could play the hell out of the game, so I'm sure he knows something.

I actually watched the NFLN documentary on Namath and it was pretty insightful. Yes, he was a raging alcoholic w/the attempt to kiss Suzy K.

But, I didn't realize how badly he was injured in the early 70s. He was basically playing on no knees. Dude played thru some serious pain. I heard about his knees but I was too young to realize what he went through.

If he wins the SB this year, it'll almost be a guaranteed stamp into the HOF, especially if he orchestrates another come-from-behind win.

Won't be able to say the defense carried him. This one is on him.
