Brown is Digest Player of Week

Antonio Brown set franchise record with 17 catches for 284 yards in the win over Oakland.

Antonio Brown missed Ben Roethlisberger during the four games the Steelers franchise quarterback was sidelined with a sprained knee, and if the first-team All-Pro wide receiver decided to make up for lost time during today’s game against the Raiders at Heinz Field, he did it in historic fashion. In what ended up being a nail-biting 38-35 victory, Brown set franchise records with 17 catches for 284 yards, and just to add a cherry on top of that sundae he rushed twice for 22 yards to finish the game with 306 yards from scrimmage.

And Brown did more than just deliver huge numbers for fantasy league owners who have him on their teams; he made a strong case for himself as being the reason the Steelers won to raise their record to 5-4. With 55 seconds left in a game that was tied, 35-35, the Steelers faced a third-and-2 from their own 28-yard line. Landry Jones, filling in for Ben Roethlisberger, who was forced from the game with a sprained foot, threw a short pass over the middle to Brown, who took the ball and turned it into a 57-yard big play that gave the Steelers a first down at the Oakland 15-yard line. Three plays later, Chris Boswell’s 18-yard field goal provided the deciding points in that 38-35 victory.

Antonio Brown is the Steelers Digest Player of the Week.

Finishing a very, very close second was DeAngelo Williams, who would have come away with this recognition had Brown not chosen the same day for his historic levels of production. Williams rushed for 170 yards on 27 carries (6.3 average) with two touchdowns, and he also caught two passes for 55 more yards to finish with 215 yards from scrimmage.

Also considered were: Antwon Blake, who finished with nine tackles, including one for loss, plus two passes defensed and a forced fumble; Cam Heyward, who had eight tackles, including one for loss; Ross Cockrell, who had two tackles, two passes defensed and an interception in the end zone; Will Allen, who returned from injury to finish with seven tackles and three passes defensed; and Mike Mitchell, who had four tackles, one pressure, and a forced fumble.

DeAngelo Williams perhaps, but that's it. no one else came even close to what those 2 guys did today...

They were combined something like 88% of the offense today

we should probably start a Boykin thread to discuss that...:wink02:

Not only did he rack up a lot of yards, he also extended some key plays that allowed the Steelers to extend the drive and score.

Can Williams continue to be a guy who gets 29 touches in a game? After all, he entered this season with 14 career 20-carry games. He now has two such games in three starts for the Steelers.

But he said he’s ready.

“Oh yeah, it feels great,” Williams said of his body after the game. “The ball’s not heavy at all.”

@ I asked Antonio Brown if he felt like he was in the zone during Sunday’s game – you know, that time when a player knows he can’t be covered, can’t miss a shot or won’t ever give up a hit.

“Absolutely, had a good flow, positive energy every series, and we were getting the looks that we had practiced for, so it was a good day,” said Brown.

All Brown did was catch a team-record 17 passes for 284 yards and put up 306 total yards, the most in franchise history. That’s about as in the zone as you can be.

@ Oakland seemingly kept leaving its corners on an island against Brown. The Raiders did double him when he went deep but seemed content to let him work underneath.

That wasn’t a good move.

As much as people like to complain about the Steelers’ coaching staff, the other teams have coaches, too.

@ The Steelers’ secondary isn’t the greatest in terms of coverage to be sure. But they are showing off a physical presence that is making teams take notice.

As much as you might not appreciate Mike Mitchell’s theatrics, he is playing well and creating havoc.

The same goes for much-maligned Antwon Blake.

Stefon Diggs is only the receiving leader on the Vikings because Wallace is the greatest decoy ever!

Antonio Brown will never be a good #1 WR without Mike Wallace taking the top off the coverage...

I was one that thought Wallace's presence had some involvement in Brown's production...lol. I don't think it hurt, but it was far, far, far less than anyone could have imagined...lol.

I am sure there are a few out there hoping Wallace would stay and Brown would go. I doubt a single one of them would point themselves out.

86WARD also wasn't the one who continued to make excuses for Wallace's lack of production after he left and still adamantly refused to admit that Brown was the superior WR when it became obvious that he was, either...

Just remember combined AB and Mike Wallace had 18 catches for 288 yards last week! :heh:

True stat, Mike Wallace had one catch for 4 yards last Sunday. For the season to date 27 catches for 296 yards 11 yards avg and 1 td.

Nah, steeldawg will go to his grave grasping at the fact that Wallace was the best WR ever. After all he had the best first 3 years of any WR ever, or something like that. Well, at least the best WR that doesn't jump.

To steeldawg's credit though, he did pick Bell as the star of the 2013 draft. Hard to argue that now.
