Cortez Allen deflects a pass intended for Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson in a 2014 game.

PITTSBURGH -- In terms of pedigree and experience, Cortez Allen and Brandon Boykin are both, as Mike Tomlin likes to say, "been-there, done-that" guys.

Lately, neither has done much nor been anywhere to be seen in the Steelers' secondary.

Allen has been out since Week 1 with a knee injury, the latest blow in a series of misadventures for the fifth-year pro.

Boykin, who the Steelers acquired in a late July trade from Philadelphia to sure up what was viewed as a depleted and largely inexperienced defensive backfield, has been the "Where's Waldo?" candidate of the team. He's taken just 12 defensive snaps, relegated to special teams contributor.

Needless to say, it's not where either figured to be in the Steelers' plans just seven weeks ago. Frustrated? You could say that.

"I try to stay positive all the time," Allen said. "You'll never really see me down because I'm a big picture guy. If I can't do something here, then somewhere else I can help or something I can do to help to be successful and I'll find that."

It remains uncertain if he'll ever find that in Pittsburgh. Same with Boykin.

... at 6+ million a year for doing nothing, I can see why.

How'd they get that one picture of Allen defending a pass...that's a valuable picture.

We've always got to have one turd of a contract on the books, don't we? At least it's not Woodley money, but if Allen was going to fuck up this bad, we sure could've used that $6M for something else ...

I think we should start another thread to discuss who this Boykin character is!

Cortez Allen pointing to several 'coach Tomlin questions'

By Neal Coolong

NFL teams are required to list participation reports after three practices leading into each week’s game. Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen has been listed as a full participant far less often than he’s been listed as having been limited, according to Tribune Review reporter Chris Adamski.

Officially, he’s listed as having a knee injury, the same one he got during the Steelers’ Week 1 loss to the Patriots.

It’s peculiar that he’s bounced between participating fully and being limited so often over such a long stretch of time. As Adamski pointed out, this is the same Cortez Allen who was benched and placed on injured reserve last year. At least with that he had a tangible injury — a broken thumb that required surgery.

Similar sentiment comes out regarding Brandon Boykin and what’s amounting to be one of the least beneficial trades in recent memory. The Steelers appear set in their cornerback rotation of Will Gay, Antwon Blake and Ross Cockrell. But considering contracts and traded draft picks, the most expensive Steelers cornerbacks appear to need divine intervention to see the field.

Allen himself doesn’t appear to understand why he’s not playing, either.

Asked if he’s getting closer to being cleared to play, Allen responded, “That’s a Coach Tomlin question.”

Asked if it’s just taken a while to get over his knee injury, he said, after a five-second pause, “Ummmm, the situation is what it is. And… (4-second pause)… that’s just probably a question better answered by Coach Tomlin.”

Are you frustrated?

Allen and Boykin are sharing it, there's room now that Lance Moore is gone...

Waiting on Keenan Lewis and losing him ultimately forced Steelers to move on Cortez when they did. Had no choice. Looks like wrong choice.

Cost an average of $1 million less a year too. Yeah yeah yeah he wanted to play for his hometown team. Would have been well worth paying him $7-8 million a year to try to keep him here
