Martavis Bryant, James Harrison earn top PFF grades

By Neal Coolong

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Pro Football Focus gave Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant the highest offensive grade for the Steelers in their 25-13 win over the Cardinals Sunday. He was one of our Players of the Game. He scored twice and had 137 receiving yards.

Bryant earned a 3.1 grade from the plays evaluation web site in his first game of the 2015 season. Bryant’s explosive playmaking ability has been noted by the site previously. His previous career high, though, was a 1.3 grade from the Steelers’ Week 14 win over the Bengals last year.

James Harrison has been a PFF favorite throughout the time the site has been distributing grades. His 4.6 grade was the highest among the defensive players, and the second-highest of the 2015 season. Harrison notched a whopping 7.2 for his performance against the Chargers in Week 5. That makes him the fifth-highest ranked 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL.

Cornerback Antwon Blake, one of our Duds from Sunday, had the lowest grade on the team at -3.4. That was his lowest of the year, and it seems justified upon first blush. Blake was beaten in coverage often, by John Brown in particular. Brown had a career-high 196 receiving yards.

Markus Wheaton’s -2.2 was the second-lowest, some of which stemming from a dropped pass across the middle in the first half.

Game hero Landry Jones had a -0.5 to go with all his postgame accolades. In a strictly results-based format, the grade makes sense. In a Tebow-ian way, people will forget quickly the fact Jones did not make a difficult throw to Bryant on his 88-yard touchdown. The pass traveled about nine yards in the air, and Bryant out-ran the rest of the Cardinals’ defense the rest of the way.
