Cardinals coach Bruce Arians spent five years as the offensive coordinator of the Steelers before parting ways with the team after the 2011 season in a move that the Steelers framed as Arians’s retirement.

It wasn’t a retirement, obviously. Arians went to the Colts for a year as offensive coordinator, became the interim head coach when Chuck Pagano was battling cancer and parleyed that into his current job. Arians has gone 25-11 with the Cardinals, proving that he had plenty left in the tank after being let go in Pittsburgh.

Arians will lead the Cardinals into Heinz Field on Sunday for his first regular season game against the Steelers since being dispatched, but says it is “just another game” rather than a chance to score a win with extra personal satisfaction.

Arizona Cardinals' Bruce Arians simmers over Pittsburgh departure

By The Sports Xchange | Oct. 15, 2015

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Over the past two years, Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians often referred to the Pittsburgh Steelers "re-firing" him after the 2011 season. He also mentioned several times that he gives thanks every day that the Steelers didn't renew his contract.

Clearly, the way he was forced out as offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh bothered him. The Steelers said Arians retired, but in reality, they didn't renew his contract. The decision was made by ownership, not head coach Mike Tomlin.

This Sunday will be the first time Arians returns to Pittsburgh as a head coach. He's downplaying it, calling it "just another game."

Not many people believe that, including Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, who played for Arians.

"Knowing him and how competitive he is, I'm sure he's going to want to come in and put on a show, seeing how many people counted him out and wanted him out of here," Brown said on a conference call Wednesday.

Regardless of the outcome Sunday, Bruce Arians needed to go after 2011. He can be sour about it as much as he wants.

As long as he stays where he is and never comes back, he's cool with me.
