Those who were clamoring for a backfield of both Le'Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams on Sunday were in for a letdown.
You could say they were left feeling empty.
Not only did the Steelers just twice use “pony” personnel of running backs Bell (the AFC's rushing leader in 2014) and Williams (the AFC's leading rusher in 2015 heading into Sunday) on the field at the same time, they hardly used Williams at all. He played just three non-kneeldown snaps.
The throwback-style idea of Williams and Bell lining up behind quarterback Ben Roethlisberger never was going to happen. If it happened at all, it was going to feature one (likely, Bell) lined up out wide.
The Steelers took it a step further, though — often not putting either of them in the backfield...........
