Merril Hoge revealed on ESPN Monday that he will be taking some time off to undergo heart surgery.

While speaking with Trey Wingo and Tim Hasselbeck on "NFL Primetime," Hoge announced he’ll be out the next few weeks to focus on his health.

“I’m going to be gone — I’m taking a little bye week. I’m going to have heart surgery, but I’ll be back in a month, though,” Hoge said.

The former Steelers running back later joked that he wanted to return before Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is expected to miss four to six weeks after suffering a sprained MCL (http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2015-09-27/ben-roethlisberger-steelers-injury-update-4-6-weeks-knee-mcl-sprain-no-surgery) in his left knee during Sunday's win over the Rams.

“I challenged him: Let’s see who can be back quicker, me or him — back to the field or back to the studio,” Hoge said....

I only wish he could have played for us when we were a serious contender. Unfortunately, he was about a decade late/early (depending on how you look at it) for that.

Best wishes and best of luck to Hoge. Heart surgery is a scary thing.

He carried the team in the 89 playoffs. Good luck to him in surgery. He's a fighter.

He probably needs heart surgery because of all the 'roids those dirty cheating Squeelers used back in the day, right Haslett? (I'M JOKING)

In all seriousness though, God speed. He was a great Steeler back in the day.
