There may have been less blunt ways to ask it, but there’s no doubt that the first question of 49ers coach Jim Tomsula’s Monday press conference was the thing on plenty of people’s minds after Sunday’s 47-7 loss to the Cardinals.

“Why is Colin Kaepernick still your starting quarterback?”

Tomsula said that he believes Kaepernick has “the tools to be a very good quarterback,” even though they were never in evidence on Sunday. Kaepernick was 9-of-19 for 67 yards and four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns, but Tomsula said he hasn’t thought about Blaine Gabbert or anyone else taking over the reins of the offense.

“You know … here’s where I am with that … yes, he’s our starting quarterback, OK? But we’re in the game of football,” Tomsula said, via the San Jose Mercury News. “Infinity and statements to that term at any position … but I’ve had no thoughts of him not being our quarterback. He’s our quarterback.’
