Ben Roethlisberger carted to locker room with apparent knee injury

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 27, 2015

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has exited today’s game in St. Louis with an apparent left knee injury.

Roethlisberger dropped back to pass, felt some pressure and tried to step forward in the pocket just as he got hit low by Rams safety Mark Barron. Roethlisberger immediately dropped the ball and fell to the ground clutching his knee. He was carted to the locker room.

Shortly after Roethlisberger’s exit, the Steelers announced he will not return today.

If Roethlisberger is out for a significant period of time, it would be a devastating loss for the Steelers, who were expected to have one of the best offenses in the NFL this season.

For now, Roethlisberger has been replaced by backup quarterback Michael Vick.

Call me crazy, but I didn't see his knee get hit or buckle. He got hit in the fibula/tibia area and I could have sworn it bent (as in broke). I hope I'm wrong, but it looked serious live and even worse on the one replay.

Actually it was Maddox and he almost pissed the '05 season down the drain for us as it was. Ben came back just in time to salvage the bottom seed in the AFC for us.

Correction: my bad - Batch went 2-0 during 2005 as well (Maddox was 0-2). I only remember Maddox snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against Jacksonville that year. That absolutely sucked.

And like you mentioned, that defense was light years ahead of the one we have now.

I wonder why QB's don't wear a more protective brace on their knees. They are the most vulnerable player on the field, standing still like a statue. They have guys coming at them, every single play. A brace would give them support in case something like this happens. The brace isn't really going to interfere with anything at all, except running, which they seldom do anyway.

I first thought of that back when Kimo wrecked Carson Palmer.

Put a brace on them knees.

Intentional or not, that is not the issue. Even if they were to fine Barron, it cannot change what has happened (and I don't think it was intentional). A penalty is not going to keep a 300lb guy from even accidentally falling against your legs at a bad angle. If you have a brace on, in the instance something like that does happen your knee has a lot more support than just its own tissue.

No telling until the MRI. If it's a torn ACL he's done for the season. Fuck :frusty: I hate to say this, and I was too busy to bring this up last week, but I kinda felt like Mike Mitchell brought bad karma on us by diving into David Hyde's knee last week. It was the worst kind of cheap shot, totally avoidable. Anyway I know it sounds silly, and there's no connection between one and the other. But when you got a guy diving at engaged players knees it's kinda hard to complain when your star gets taken out by a cheap hit.

OK I said my stupid statement for the day. But again I just hate when we have a no play cheap shot artist like that on the team. It just brings bad karma on you.

Yeah you're probably right. All the same I hope they get rid of Mitchell after this season. Bad enough he's overpaid and mediocre. But the cheap shot b.s. bothers the hell out of me. He basically announced last year he was going to go after guys knees, and true to his word he went after an engaged player directly at the knee. I'm all for hard hitting. But there should be a fellowship fo trust to some extent and you shouldn't try to deliver a shot that does nothing but put a fellow player in danger. That's what happened last week. And that's what happened on the hit with Ben today.

Anyway as a fan as long as we got this jerk on our team there's no moral high ground to be had when one of our guys is dealt dirty.

Thank you for the clarification.

I've found that modern "journalists" want to be FIRST more than they want to be CORRECT. Schefter probably tweeted it, in order to be FIRST... but, erased it when he realized it was not CORRECT (found out it had no basis).

Rapoport does this this all of the time. He'll tweet something, be wrong, and then send out an apology tweet.

[QUOTE]

No team with an elite qb has a good backup. Dallas is suffering with Brandon Weeden as their qb. NO is going with Luke McCown. I would be no more optimistic if those were our backup guys. If you have an elite qb, and he's out for more than a few games, you're sunk. Steve Young as a backup for Joe Montana almost never happens.

At least have a QB who can throw and read simple plays.

We'll only know for sure once the MRI results are in. The rest is speculation.

My speculation is Ben back after the Bye week

Vick's call sheet for the next 4 weeks:

1. Hand off to Bell
2. Hand off to Williams
3. Do not turn it over!!!

The problem is teams will stack the box to stop the run. Vick needs to learn how to pass come Thursday.

He knows how to pass. He just can't read defenses very well. If his first read is covered he's pretty much lost now that his elite athleticism is no more. So basically they're going to have to dummy the offense up. Make it a play action one read offense, and if Bell is getting his yards chances are it will open enough up for Vick that the passing game wont be a complete waste.

Throw the ball to Brown...he'll find a way to grab it and once Bryant returns, throw the ball to Brown, throw deep to Bryant.
