The prickly outline of his hard Texas childhood frames a dusty speck on the map called Cuero, somewhere and nowhere between Houston and San Antonio, a hot ride south out of Yoakum and just as far from Hope.


Especially, it too often seemed, from hope.


Something bad usually has happened when Cody Wallace turns up in the starting lineup of your NFL team, but the man playing center for the Steelers has a life’s worth of experience at turning bad news into good.


Plugged in for Maurkice Pouncey when the All-Pro’s leg was broken in August, Wallace sustains a football career on the very fringes of the league’s personnel wire. Of the NFL’s 32 teams, several are yet to release him. In eight years, he has started eight games.
