It looks like it’s more fun playing defensive end for the Steelers these days. No longer must they throw themselves on the barbed-wire fence of opponents’ blocks to allow their linebackers to swoop in and make the plays and get the glory.
Cam Heyward and Stephon Tuitt now can rush the quarterback, blow up guards in one-on-one matchups and disrupt offensive plays. It’s part of defensive coordinator Keith Butler’s new philosophy of allowing his linemen to play one-gap rather than two-gap. That simply means their assignments are more aggressive in penetrating and getting rid of blocks rather than absorbing as much as they could to keep their linebackers clean of them and free to make the plays.............
