The jumbo goal-line package the Steelers used in their first game against New England did not see the light of day Sunday when the Steelers played San Francisco. When the Steelers got close to the goal line against the 49ers, they eschewed old-school football principles and embraced the concept of spreading out defensive personnel.

The Steelers did not use fullback Roosevelt Nix. They did not use H-back Will Johnson as their power halfback. They did not line up with an extra tackle or an extra tight end.

The Steelers played with three receivers, a tight end and running back DeAngelo Williams on all their snaps inside the 10.

The Steelers also changed their pace. By using their no-huddle offense, the Steelers were able to dictate the 49ers’ defensive personnel. And on nearly every occasion inside the 10, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger found the right play for the offense.

“That was huge for us,” tight end Heath Miller said of using the hurry-up offense at the goal line. “As long as we’re organized and everyone is on the same page, it has to be tough on a defense. They have to get themselves together after a big play. The coach has to think about where they are on the field. We have our plays ready to go. It can be an asset for us.”...........
