Steelers linebacker Dupree attracting attention for his fights, improvement on field

When they’re not fighting with him, tackles Marcus Gilbert and Kelvin Beachum share more than the same Steelers uniform with rookie linebacker Bud Dupree.

They share their secrets.

“We go against some of the top pass rushers every weekend,” Gilbert said. “We see it, so we try to give him little details, insight, what he can improve, what’s not working for him and what he can get better at.”

Those were not the kinds of words of advice from Beachum and Gilbert that sparked the Bud Light-Up during practice Wednesday afternoon, in which Dupree took on both tackles on separate occasions in a scrum that eventually prompted Mike Tomlin to toss him out of the drill.

By Thursday, not only had everyone calmed down, but Dupree also might have elicited a little more respect around the Saint Vincent College campus in its final days as host of the 50th Steelers training camp.

“We want to see a little nastiness and feistiness from him,” Gilbert said. “Obviously, that’s the first time we’ve seen that from him. But he’s a guy who’s getting better every day and bringing a little edge to him. That’s what we like to see, obviously not the fighting but bringing the nastiness to his position. He’s just going to get better every day.”

Glad to hear something positive on our first round pick. Watching him play, there hasn't been anything to feel good about with the guy. He is feckless out there.
