Steelers rookie cornerback Senquez Golson had shoulder surgery this morning, but coach Mike Tomlin said he did not know how long his No. 2 draft choice from Mississippi would be out.

However, because the Steelers waited this long, it is likely Golson will miss the entire season.

Golson, taken 56th overall in the draft, has been on the team’s physically unable to perform list since the start of training camp. Tomlin said the Steelers knew he would likely need surgery, but waited until now because they wanted Golson to experience training camp at Saint Vincent College and sit in on meetings.

Today is the final afternoon practice at Saint Vincent. The Steelers officially break camp Saturday morning.

“We thought [camp] would be a good experience, that’s why we waited until now,” Tomlin said. “Hopefully the weeks have been beneficial for him.”

Most of us saw this coming from the first time we heard Tomlin say, "We will just have to wait and see." We knew what that meant. Once a cuff is torn, it's over. Must have surgery.

Is it a torn cuff?

Is it a torn cuff?

Of the possible types of shoulder surgeries, I don't see any that could fit this case other than cuff repair but they never specified. I am just guessing.

It is also apparent that they have known all along it would require surgery and they didn't do it earlier because Tomlin said he wanted Golson to experience camp, even if he wasn't playing. That's his story, any how.

This, plus the fact that you do not tear "a rotator cuff". You tear one of the four muscles in the cuff.

Unless of course one has their arm ripped off....

For a secondary looking to struggle this season this news officially blows. The fact that we went DB in rounds 2, 4, and 7 was huge but now the first one we took is down, and likely for the season

The only reasons I am not more bummed is:

1.) A rookie might not have played much this season any how.
2.) We picked up Boykin, who looks like the real deal to me, plus Gay is looking in form (he gets underrated by most) and Allen may have rebounded.

^ Yeah I agree he probably wouldn't have seen a whole lot of time, I was just really excited about watching our 2nd and 4th round CBs develop

Yea, me too. I hope this is the worst we suffer for losing a player all year.

I hear that! At least we get to watch #24 HOPEFULLY get some playing time. I think it is CRITICAL for rookies to learn the speed of the game early-on. Look how Ben panned out. Some players are ready for the transition from college-pros the day they graduate. I'm not saying Grant is one of those players but I AM a big believer in his Ohio State bro Ryan Shazier. Kid is going to be a phenom. I look for him to be a more impressive #50 over Larry Foote. The speed and playmaker-mentality have me excited. Best ILB tandem in the league 2016-2017?

One position the Steelers need resolved. I know he may not have started but this is a position I think we are thin at.
