View Full Version : Steelers rookie Bud Dupree thrown off the field for fighting

If the league’s not going to do anything about on-field fighting, the Steelers will.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin just kicked outside linebacker Bud Dupree off the practice field for fighting with a teammate.

It was the second tussle of the practice for Dupree, who tangled with guard Ramon Foster and wouldn’t let it go.

According to Dulac, the first-rounder was grabbed by veteran defensive end Cam Hayward in an effort to break things up, then escorted off the field by linebacker Lawrence Timmons.

This stage near the end of training camps is usually when most of the fights break out, with the Cowboys and Rams throwing down last night merely the most dramatic.

We’ll now anxiously tune into “the network” tonight to see how many times the Dupree scrap gets replayed, though it likely won’t be 11.

I don't mind this actually. I like seeing a player with a bit of a mean streak in him. As long as no one's getting injured, it's all good.

Reading a bit more about it, it sounds like Dupree took it too far. He wouldn't stop and wouldn't shut up. Had to be physically removed. That's too much.

"Fire in the belly" is one of the top priorities to becoming a good football player. Hopefully, this indicates he has it.

Second to brains in the head. If he doesn't know when to shut up or when to turn it off, "fire in the belly" equals 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. It only takes a few of those to lose a game.

Yes, which is why I edited my post above after learning more info. I love seeing the fire, but you've got to be able to control it.

Players like Mean Joe Green, Greg Lloyd, Jack Lambert, James Harrison, etc. have had problems controlling their rage early in their careers, too. I wonder if they were any good?

Didn't Mean Joe try to bring a screwdriver into the game, hidden in his sock, at one point? Didn't Ernie "Arrow head" Holmes shoot at a cop chopper at one point?

So...apparently it's cool to completely lose control on the field to the point of possibly costing your team 15 yards in a game situation, but it's not OK to talk to the media in the offseason about a goal to become the best ever at one's position which was brought up by one of the coaches to begin with, or for a QB to talk about how his current supporting cast on offense is the best he's ever had.

OK, then...

Um, if Deebo has to hold you back, you ain't going to move any further. No use in jawing at that point. That will only irritate James so no participation medals for you, Bud.

Emotions should be running high, but you have to be able to bring them under control after some team mates try to cool you down.

I am looking for the post where someone stated it was cool to completely lose control on the field to the point of costing the team 15 yards....I guess I better keep looking, because I don't see ANYWHERE where that was ever asserted. Maybe the innernets are on the fritz.

You try sleeping in a twin bed in dorm room with another full grown, sweaty, snoring 289 lb NFL player for a month and see how sweet your disposition would be.

Yes, it certainly wasn't implied or anything.

The world (and the league) have both changed as well. Behavior (and speech) that wouldn't have raised an eyebrow in 1975 often bring swift and completely over-the-top retribution in many cases in 2015...

Hell, if Lambert and Greene played today, they'd probably wind up owing the league money at the end of every season from being fined so much.

Mean Joe once ripped a door off the facility because he got pissed off from losing early in his career. Coach Noll stuck his smiling face inside Greene's room after the incident and cheerfully said, "That'll be a $500 fine for bad behavior."

Doesn't sound like much now, but in the NFL of 1969/1970, it was a LOT.

Basically - it's ok that Dupree loses his cool as long as he becomes a Hall of Fame player like Greene and Lambert. Until he shows us that - DONT COST US 15 YARDS!!!

Maybe all the info of two a days practice into one day is setting off tempers for a lot of these young players. Information overload and not enough time to work out the kinks , failing to reach their expections leads to frustration.

Save it for plays in the game. No need to be fighting teammates

Finally some positive news about Dupree. I don't mind this at all. Now I would like to hear something similar about Jarvis.

Maybe I'm nitpicking, but I would like Jarvis to start at least small fight in the future. [emoji6]

I'd agree...I would also like to see Jarvis start a fight...it would show that maybe he cared a little bit? In a perfect world, he'd start a fight with Landry Jones and break his nose so Landry has to go on an IR list. It would be one of the first positive things Jarvis has done for the team.
