View Full Version : Geno Smith “sucker punched” in Jets’ locker room, out 6-10 weeks

Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been injured in a fight in the team’s locker room and will likely miss the start of the regular season.
In a stunning announcement today, Jets coach Todd Bowles said that Smith suffered a broken jaw when he was “sucker punched” by Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali. The Jets have cut Enemkpali as a result.
Smith is expected to miss 6-10 weeks. The Jets’ opener is less than five weeks away, so Smith will almost certainly miss some time to start the regular season.
Training camp fights are common, but those fights are usually on the practice field, when players are in full pads. For a player to seriously injure a teammate in the locker room is very rare. And for a player to seriously injure his team’s starting quarterback is completely shocking.
For Smith and the Jets, it’s a major setback. And it’s a story that will raise serious questions around the NFL, about whether the league needs to crack down harder on fights between teammates.

Enemkpali was arrested April 2011 and charged w/ disturbing peace, battery of police officer. But coaches said it was against his character.

Wow that's crazy. I've heard of fights before but never something to this extent. Cam Newton just got into it at practice the other day too.
I'd be worried about playing shape and body weight after a broken jaw. Surely he will lose weight because of drinking through a straw for the next 2 months won't he?

Geno Smith out 6-10 weeks; 'sucker punch' over $600 dispute
The altercation in the New York Jets (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyj/new-york-jets) locker room that ended with quarterback Geno Smith (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15864/geno-smith) suffering a fractured jaw began with a dispute over $600, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.Smith, who will miss at least six to 10 weeks with two fractures in his jaw, accepted a $600 plane ticket from IK Enemkpali (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16858/ikemefuna-enemkpali) to appear at the reserve linebacker's football camp in Pflugerville, Texas, according to sources. Problems arose when Smith did not show to the camp, which took place days after someone close to Smith died in a motorcycle accident in Miami, sources said.
After Smith did not attend, Enemkpali demanded that the Jets quarterback refund him the $600 he allegedly used to purchase a plane ticket. Smith told Enemkpali he would reimburse him the money, but had not as of Tuesday morning. Enkempali confronted Smith on Tuesday about the money and the confrontation ended in a punch and broken jaw.....

So a guy making $500k a year just lost his job over $600.
First, Geno Smith should have immediately refunded this guy the ticket money when he decided not to go to the camp. Yeah, it's sad that a close friend died, but he made a commitment to be there and didn't show costing his teammate money.
Second, from what I've read it's not like the guy just walked up to Geno and slugged him literally out of nowhere. They had a verbal confrontation before this happened, and I am going to guess Geno Smith said something really stupid.
Third, this reserve linebacker should get the team MVP award.

“These guys were in each other’s face,” Clark said on ESPN’s radio show “Mike & Mike.” “Geno put his finger in his face and told the guy, ‘Well, you’re not going to do anything about it.’
DOH!

I don't know if anyone remembers, I'm not sure why I do, last season Smith got in a fight with a Titans player who threw punches at Smith as well...maybe Smith is just an asshole...probably didn't deserve to have a jaw broken, but nonetheless, an asshole he might be.

If Smith was in his face pointing his finger and saying "you aren't going to do anything about it, are ya", The guy almost had no choice. If he walks away he is humiliated. I think I'd have hit him too, just out of principle.

He was a Rex Ryan era draft pick. I don't think it was so much a stick-it-to-the-Jets thing as much as Ryan thinks the kid can develop into a good pass rusher.
