Pittsburgh Steelers sign Garrett Hartley

The Steelers have replaced injured kicker Shaun Suisham with a player with plenty of experience in big moments.

The agent for Garrett Hartley announced Tuesday that the former New Orleans Saints kicker has agreed to terms with the Steelers. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported it's a 1-year deal.

Hartley kicked three clutch field goals in the Super Bowl five years ago, and is a perfect 8-for-8 in postseason games. Suisham will miss the season with a torn ACL.

Indoor kicker. Lets hope he manages to kick well outside.

Now we REALLY have to hope our red zone offense does well this year

Can he kick into the end zone on kickoffs? That was Sushishamwow's achilles heel or achilles "toe"....

He is too inconsistent, but we'll see.

He was bad in 2013...

For his career, Hartley has made 6-of-8 from beyond 50 yards and only missed an extra one point once in 179 attempts.

Garrett Hartley's numbers not great overall, but this is interesting. Career 88.6% rate on FGs on grass, just 78.3% on turf. Odd. #Steelers

This wasn't the guy I thought they'd sign, but I'll reserve judgement until he screws up. :wink02:

That being said, it truly does suck that our kicker position is probably now going to closely mirror our punter situation from the last few years. I don't know what the cases look like for kickers to come back from ACL tears at this point in their careers but I assume it's not great. I have to wonder if Sushi will ever be effective again? Certainly seems to be a bigger blow than just a single lost season. Daniel Sepulveda comes to mind, but of course he could never stay healthy.

It's always something with us Steelers. :chuckle:

Did they break it down by yardage?

You miss 3 FGs on grass, all over 55 yards = 0%

You make 3 FGs on turf all within 30 yards = 100%

Stats mean little unless you break them down far enuf.

well that definitely reassures me some. i thought a kicker for the saints would have definitely been a lot better on turf

It's probably better to go wit ha younger guy who still has decent experience. We will have to make due with the situation we are in and I don't think this is a bad signing.

Welcome to Pittsburgh Garrett!

Another reason to hate our special teams

suisham has come a long way after being THE poster boy for a choking kicker with the redskins and cowboys. so theres that. ugh, but we still seem to have the worst luck when it comes to special teams

Exactly. As I recall, most people on this board hated it when we signed him.

I still think that we'll pick up another kicker for competition once the roster cut downs start.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Hartley edged out kicker Jay Feely for the vacancy during a training-camp Gong Show tryout. Hartley and Feely made all kicks with the exception of one; they both missed from 53 yards out.

the tiebreaker might have been that Hartley is a lot younger...

Hartley is 9-of-10 on kicks during career when game-time kickoff temperature was 36° F or lower. #Steelers

...and that Feeley is terrible on kickoffs. Vey important part of the equation.

"Garrett" is more of a PK name than "Jay". :chuckle:
